David Spade: Ascerbic Wit Combined With Great Comedic Talent

David Spade has been a thorn in the side of Hollywood since he found his groove as Saturday Night Live's Hollywood Minute Guy. Currently seen as Russell on the series Rules of Engagement, Spade has been quietly (okay not so quietly) putting together quite a body of work.

Spade Had His Big Break On Saturday Night Live

David Spade really caught our attention as "The Hollywood Reporter" on SNL. Basically it was Spade ripping into some celebrities and a couple of his better shots were:

When he mentioned SNL alumnus Eddie Murphy, Spade did a joke in which they showed a photograph of Murphy, whose career had started to falter, and Spade quipped, "Look children, a falling star--make a wish."

Also, when rapper MC Hammer's financial troubles were becoming apparent. Spade joked (to the tune of Hammer's hit "Can't Touch This"), "Do. Do-do-do. Do-do. Do-do. It's over."

Just Shoot Me: Seasons One and Two

Just Shoot Me
Seasons One and Two

Just Shoot Me: Seasons One and Two

When Just Shoot Me debuted on NBC on a Tuesday night (following Frasier) in 1997, the spirited sitcom had the feel of an instant winner.

The casting alone was an inspired blend of talent from uniquely interesting sources: George Segal, the veteran actor best known for comic performances in such 1970s film classics as Blume in Love and California Split, was certainly overdue for a hit. Laura San Giacomo, a strong and intriguing presence for a decade in a number of key movies (sex, lies, and videotape, Pretty Woman) promised good things as the series' lead player. Wendie Malick, the former model turned ubiquitous supporting player on the likes of NYPD Blue and Seinfeld, had left an especially indelible impression on HBO's long-running comedy series Dream On. Finally, David Spade, fresh from his great ride as a Saturday Night Live cast member, brought a version of a popular SNL character (Dick Clark's supercilious receptionist) to Just Shoot Me, playing Dennis Finch, the haughty assistant of Segal's magazine publisher.

Tommy Boy (Holy Schnike Edition)

Before his death, comedian Chris Farley made a pair of surprisingly successful comedies that teamed him with Saturday Night Live colleague David Spade.

Their relationship in each film was pretty much the same, but then so was Abbott and Costello's or Laurel and Hardy's (not that Farley and Spade are in their league).

In Tommy Boy, Farley plays the ne'er-do-well son of a successful auto parts manufacturer (Brian Dennehy). When Dad drops dead just after marrying a young new wife, it's up to Tommy (aided by sarcastic bean-counter Spade) to rescue the company by taking over for his father. Black Sheep features a slightly different plot: This time, Spade is hired by Farley's brother (Tim Matheson), a candidate for governor, to keep Farley (an accident-prone buffoon) out of sight until after the election. Farley has a likable quality that is exploited by continuous slapstick centered on his clumsiness, both physically and socially.
