Sometimes nicknamed "the King of Venereal Horror," David Cronenberg is a Canadian film director known for exploring themes of bodily mutation and psychological transformation in his movies.

His latest film is EASTERN PROMISES and it won the top award at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival.

Starring Viggo Mortenson and Naomi Watts, this film focuses on a nurse who is drawn into the world of Russian mobsters when she investigates the life of a 14 year old girl who dies while giving birth to a baby. Mortensen is a gangster and driver for a Russian crime syndicate operating behind the facade of a London restaurant.

Production Begins on David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises
Eastern Promises, the new thriller from director David Cronenberg, begins production in London next week. The film is written by Steven Knight (Academy Award-nominated screenwriter of Dirty Pretty Things). The Kudos Pictures and Serendipity Point Films co-production will be distributed domestically and internationally by Focus Features; Canadian distribution will be handled by Alliance Atlantis* Motion Picture Distribution LP.
Cronenberg to Make Some "Eastern Promises"
Scott Weinberg writes: "True, he just signed on last week to direct a flick called "Maps to the Stars," but there's certainly nothing wrong with lining up the next gig while that awards buzz is still flowing. "A History of Violence" director David Cronenberg is expected to sign on for "Eastern Promises," a British thriller from the guy who wrote "Dirty Pretty Things."

Inner Lives Turned Inside Out 

All of these Cronenberg movies feature characters whose seemingly-ordinary lives take a turn for the unusual. His fondness for bodily revolt is more mental and emotional in these stories.
