Learning from a Genius

The Da Vinci Project is based at the University of Oxford Classics Outreach Department. It is an exciting personalised learning programme for more able children and explores the intelligences which inspired Leonardo Da Vinci.

Children attend courses held at The University of Oxford or the University of Warwick, once a week after school.

Their studies are directed by University academics and specialist teachers. The Lead Professional is Coral Milburn-Curtis, a former headteacher and Associate Fellow of the University of Warwick.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This project is suitable for Key Stage 2 learners who enjoy an academic challenge and for those who may have been identified by school as gifted and talented.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

* to raise expectations and motivation by enabling participants to work with University academics and tutors

* to provide significant academic challenge

* to develop leadership through peer collaboration, mentoring and shared responsibility

* to raise academic expectations of learners by enabling them to work collaboratively on learner-led projects with other gifted students

* to develop self-confidence, independent learning, strategic thinking, creativity and problem solving.

WHERE AND WHEN DOES IT TAKE PLACE?

Learners attend once a week (one and a half hour sessions), for an eight week course. Sessions take place at either 4pm or 5.45pm.

Sessions take place at The University of Oxford on Wednesdays at either 4pm or 5.45pm and the University of Warwick on Thursdays, also at either 4pm or 5.45pm.

Fees are £200GBP for the shortened summer term, payable at the beginning of term. Please obtain the endorsement of the child's teacher, headteacher or G&T coordinator if this is the first time your child has applied for the Da Vinci Project..

Our Principles 

Our quest for genius...

When Leonardo da Vinci died in 1519, he bequeathed four principles for the development of genius, which were:

1. Study the science of art.
2. Study the art of science.
3. Learn how to see.
4. Understand that everything in some way connects to everything else.

These are our principles on the Da Vinci Project.

 

[My son] and his pals are always VERY keen to "Da Vinci". I take real pleasure in watching them confidently walk off to the university classroom, as I escort them from the bus each week. They're in through the Lodge gate and off - can't get away from mycoat-tails fast enough! So, that's a good growing up "side effect" of the experience for us all! LG, parent.

WHAT DO WE DO? 

Our Projects 

Our projects are provided for the Classics Outreach at The University of Oxford. Whilst our courses have a Classics perspective, they are wonderfully varied and include:

* scientific theories & discoveries
* critical reasoning
* debate
* astronomy & space science
* modern foreign languages (including Mandarin Chinese)
* thinking skills
* leadership
* Newton's Den (entrepreneurial project)
* philosophy
* logic
* publishing collaborative books
* poetry anthologies
* Shakespeare
* mathematics and competitions
* art & architecture

Homework 

There is no set homework, but all children have the opportunity to continue their projects online in the secure Virtual Learning Environment and to collaborate with others on the project.

Parents are also able to make their contributions to the projects and view their children's work.

WHO ARE WE? 

The Da Vinci Project is provided by the Oxford Learning Partnership for the Classics Outreach Programme of the University of Oxford. It exists to meet the needs of children in the top 5% of their year group by offering them a range of innovative educational opportunities and resources that are unavailable in the classroom.

Technology is utilised to create culturally diverse, dynamic environments where young learners can take the initiative and contribute and collaborate, developing their emotional literacy at the same time as deepening their understanding.

The Lead Professional is Coral Milburn-Curtis .

Coral Milburn-Curtis is from Oxford, England. After teaching in Sheffield, Harlow, South Africa and Magdalen College Oxford she took over the headship of the country's top primary school, leading it and two other primary schools for 10 years.

During that time she served as a member and leader on a number of panels for the Department of Education and the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority. As an OFSTED and an HMC school inspector, she specialised in the inspection of maths, science and ICT in primary schools.

Representing the local authority, she has been a Threshold Assessment adviser, a workforce re-modelling consultant and a Newly Qualified Teacher consultant.

Coral is the author of 'How to Protect Your Child From Bullies'.

As an accredited provider for the Young, Gifted and Talented (YG&T) initiative, she designed, coordinated and implemented online, blended and face to face courses for gifted children, delivering them at the University of Oxford and the University of Warwick.

Coral is an Associate Fellow of the University of Warwick and is the lead professional on a number of e-learning and face to face projects for gifted children, based at the University of Warwick and the University of Oxford.

Summer Term 09 Course Description 

'Money Makes the World Go Around'

Course Creator: Jen Oakton

So what is money? And what is business? And how do the two fit together?

In this course we trace the history of financial systems from bartering through to the present day, examining the philosophy of the exchange goods for pieces of metal.

We examine the history, philosophy and iconography of money, whilst leading learners to an understanding of modern business and commercial processes, looking at what it takes to become an entrepreneur and concluding with an exciting 'Dragon's Den' style activity.

Course members are expected to:

Participate enthusiastically in discussions, tasks and activities
Proof-read and edit their contributions in order to make them of the highest quality
Give encouraging feedback to other learners on the course.

Suitable for: Top 5% academically 8 -11 year olds

Evaluation: Course members will have the opportunity to evaluate the course in the last week.
