Achieving Balance Between People and Dogs

With an Emmy-nominated show on National Geographic Channel, a best-selling book, and sold-out seminars, Cesar Millan continues to add accolades to a career spanning more than 20 years, as one of the most sought-after experts in dog psychology. From bullying Chihuahuas to timid great Danes to "last chance" mixed-breeds, this "Dr. Phil for dogs" is renowned for his uncanny ability to communicate with dogs and see the world through their eyes.

Cesar's Teachings

It's All About Energy

If you've taken a look at my Law Of Attraction Lens, you've gotten familiar with the idea that everything is energy. Cesar Millan's way of teaching is all about energy as well. If you've had a chance to watch his show on The National Geographic channel or watched the DVDs, you've heard him talk about how the dog responds only to your energy. When you are giving nervous or fearful energy to your dog, its behavior will be a response to what you are feeling.

EmersonI found this to be so true. Our dog Emerson, who is now in doggy spirit, always had separation anxiety. I felt terribly guilty every time I left him and would make a long draw out deal about having to leave him. Now we have our new puppy, Tyler, who is about 10 months old. On one of Cesar's shows he told the dog's people to ignore their dog when they leave. He said to not look at the dog and just go out the door, no big deal. That way, the dog wouldn't have any guilt or worried energy to respond to. I decided to do that with Tyler and it totally worked. We leave and he looks at us, but I can tell, our leaving does not bother him. The energy or feeling we give to our dogs is the energy response we attract in our dogs.

Rehabilition and Training

Cesar's Way is Transforming

KimmieCesar says he rehabilitates dogs and trains people. I've seen him transform people and dogs. It is amazing. He teaches people how to recognize what kind of energy they give to their dogs, how that affects the dog, and shows them ways to think and feel differently. He shows the people how to offer the correct energy to have the dog feel calm and submissive (but not afraid). He also demonstrates ways to handle the dog that shows them what you expect. He is gentle, assertive, and brilliantly intuitive as well as great at gathering information from the people. He watches the interactions between dog and people to ascertain what help they need. I've seen him help a timid fearful woman to stand straight and walk with confidence. On that same show he helped her very large dog go from too aggressive and out of control to walk, to a calm attentive heel.

I highly recommend watching The Dog Whisperer.

Exercise, Discipline, Affection

The Way to Happiness for Both Dog and Person

TylerCesar teaches that an agitated, anxious, constantly barking, or aggressive dog is not a happy dog. He says these things over and over again: dogs need exercise, discipline, and then affection. This I find to be very true with our puppy. The more energy he gets to go out and let go of, the calmer and happier he is at home.

Cesar says that a dog needs at least a 40 minute walk a day, preferably not over the same territory each time. He says they need to see different things and smell different smells to keep their mind active. Our Tyler, has a particular affection for playing with other dogs and if he doesn't get to go out and socialize and run you can find him sitting on the stuffed chair in front of the living room window looking longingly out at the world he's missing. He gets at least two 40+ minute walks a day, but then he is an energetic puppy.

I've also found it good to have him heel part of every walk. This is the discipline part. Cesar says it helps them to stay calm and I think it's true.

See you next time...
