Pictures of Flowers

Taking pictures of flowers can quickly become an obsession. Here's the lens for you if you want to take a look at some great pictures of flowers, learn a tiny bit about flower identification, or if you would just like to find some great products to help you in your quest of taking pictures of flowers.

Wildflowers at Snow Mountain Ranch

Lesson learned: Pay attention to the little details of the flowers for easy identification.

Snow Mountain Ranch is nestled in a beautiful mountain valley north of Berthoud Pass and Winter Park, Colorado. This many-acre resort is home to much flora and fauna, and I found much that was photo-worthy.
This trip marked one of my first photography expeditions, and I didn't think much about identification of the flowers as I was taking pictures. When I realized how much better it would be to actually label and correctly name the flowers I was taking pictures of, I realized what a monumental task I was undertaking. You can be sure in future trips, I will be paying much closer attention to the details of each flower!
The details you're looking for? Pay attention to the shape of the leaves and how they are placed on the stems--are they opposite each other or are they alternating. Also notice the exact location of your flower--is it in a marsh or on a rocky hillside? Finally, be aware of the date. Some flowers don't bloom until July or August, so if you are having trouble distinguishing between two flowers, you can possibly rule out one flower just by the date it's in bloom.

Identifying the flowers in these photos was very difficult.

These photos represent only a tiny fraction of the beautiful flowers I found at Snow Mountain Ranch. If you can tell me what kind of flower the little white one is, I'd sure appreciate your comment and input. I learned that, while this is a delightful picture, identifying the flower is very difficult because flower guides do not show buds of the flowers. If you want a photo of just a bud, be sure to also take pictures of the full blossom for identification purposes even if what you intend on displaying as a final product is the picture of the bud.
Be sure to click on each picture to read more details about the flower and how I identified it.

Books to Help in Flower Identification

Some Guides I Use

I have found that the Peterson Field Guides and the National Audubon Society Field Guides are quite helpful in identifying different flower species. These books have been invaluable to me. In addition to great, color photos of the flowers, the guides also have informative instructional sections to help you learn more about flower identification and the details you should be looking for as you take your pictures.
Be aware: The Peterson First Guide to Wildflowers does not have color photos. This guide has drawings grouped by flower color, and the descriptions of each flower are short and easy to understand. The guide is small and easy to carry along in your pocket, so it's a good first resource.

Berthoud Pass, Colorado: Flowers at 11, 307 ft.

Lesson learned: take more than one photo of each flower.

In our travels to Snow Mountain Ranch, Jack (my husband) and I traveled over the magnificent Berthoud Pass, whose summit is at 11, 307 ft. That's nearly at tree line here, so conditions can be brutally cold, even in the middle of summer. You might not expect to find wildflowers in these brutal conditions, but I found a nice variety of flowers for such a hostile environment.

Lost Little Flower

The lesson I learned here is to never be satisfied with only one picture of a flower. We were ready to leave, and suddenly, I saw this one last flower I just had to have a picture of. Quickly, I took the picture and left. Later, as I was examining the photos I took more closely, I realized I must have moved my hand as I took the picture, or I didn't focus the camera correctly, because that darling little flower was blurry. And there weren't any others to display in its place. That flower didn't make it to my digital garden, and there wasn't opportunity to fix the problem. Next time, I'll be taking more than one photo of each flower.

Lesson learned: Be proud of your work and display it!

My travels this summer have also included Oklahoma. No snow there! But certainly, Oklahoma is filled with it's own delightful wildflowers I couldn't resist adding to my garden collection. Here are some of my favorites.
