Day 16 - Intro & Contents

When God speaks to us with Holy Spirit conviction, it often exposes the light and darkness in our lives for what it really is. This language steers us away from deception and into truth.

The Language Of Conviction

What does the conviction of the Holy Spirit sound like? It can touch us with or without words. It might be that we hear good preaching and somehow know deeply that we have to respond. Or in the earliest season of our Christian walk, we might suddenly know, "It's time to get right with God." It isn't that we heard a voice; we simply have verbalized the strong conviction that has come upon us.

He doesn't always needs words to speak to us. Sometimes the Holy Spirit simply causes us to know something, but we know it so strongly and are so persuaded of it that we can put it into our own words, and the words are right.

Conviction may move us to tears, it may cause us to tremble, or it may not stir our emotions at all. The important thing is that it moves us to new obedience to God - to stop doing some things and to start doing others.

Conviction is persuasion. The Holy Spirit persuades us with or without words, but His presence imparts the sense of urgency that causes us to act. This is why the history of revival often includes stories of a great convicting work of the Holy Spirit that moved people to forsake sin and embrace Christ.

These stories reveal one aspect of conviction: that it is the Holy Spirit's work to bring people to Jesus. But once we come to Jesus, we need to keep our ears tuned to the language of conviction. The Holy Spirit will continue to speak to us in the same way.

Sometimes as we consider a new project, everything looks fine and we are ready to commit ourselves. But then the Holy Spirit convicts us that hidden problems are waiting for us if we sign the dotted line. We call this experience "sensing a check in my spirit." It is a form of conviction. If we yield to God, it will save us from heartache later.

Sometimes the Holy Spirit begins to press one of God's promises upon us, stirring us to seek the promise by faith. Our first reaction might be that the promise is too wonderful for someone like me to receive - surely God would give it only to someone far more spiritual than I am. The Holy Spirit doesn't argue with us, but He keeps pressing the promise upon us. Many people describe this experience in these words: "There's a witness in my spirit that%u2026" If we yield to Him, He will help us grow into the kind of person who can receive what God wants to do.

The conviction of the Holy Spirit - the fear of the Lord - is the beginning of wisdom. It's a setup for those who would begin hearing the secret of the Lord on a consistent basis. God may or may not use words when He convicts us, but either way we come to know what He wants us to know.

Pay attention to conviction when it comes. This is one of the main ways God will speak to you.

Day 16 - Action Step

Learn About Conviction

Look back over your life and list times when the Holy Spirit has convicted you. How did He make His will known to you?

Talk to a few Christian friends and ask them to tell how the Holy Spirit has convicted them. Look for patterns in their testimony that will help you identify conviction in your own life.

Day 16 -- Video

The Language Of Conviction

Conviction is a form of the fear of the Lord. As such, it becomes an invitation into richer fellowship with God. After all, the secret of the Lord is with them that dear Him, and He will show them His covenant. The people who often hear secrets from God are those who respond -- however imperfectly -- to conviction.

I've noticed in my life conviction always draws me closer to the Lord. When I'm convicted I want to be near Him. On the other hand, condemnation always pushes me away. Conviction is Jesus conscious while condemnation is self conscious. Yes, conviction may reveal sin, but it's not focused on me. It reveals the sin that I may repent and be closer to Jesus.

Hi James -- thanks for your great insights about conviction vs. condemnation. This is a big issue for many. For years, it was a big issue for me. Thanks again -- Stan

Stan, I'm glad your healing is progressing so nicely. I'm grateful you've been able to share so much. It's nice to have understanding so that the experience makes sense when it happens. Thank you and GOD BLESS YOU WITH total and quick restoration.

Hi Jennifer -- thanks for your comment. God is teaching you through the experiences He is giving you. My role is small: to help connect your experiences with scripture so you can anchor your learning in scripture. We all need friends who will help us do this, and we need to wash one another's feet by helping others see their experiences in the light of the Bible. Resurrection blessings -- Stan

I had a time of conviction this week. I've been praying for a new position, a career advancement, for some years now and I've tried to make it happen on my own. In so doing, I've made some LARGE mistakes. I didn't want to do that this time, so I've been waiting and listening to what the Lord would tell me. On Friday, I found out that another executive assistant is being hired in at my present work, she'll have half the responsibilities I do, but she will be paid about $14,000 more per year than I do currently. I was sadden, and disappointed when I found out. But the moment I did find out, the Holy Spirit began to convict me and say to me, "Don't complain a bit to anyone about this, just take it to Me only and work it through with Me; do not complain." I did what I was told! And, I'm very excited to see what the Lord is going to bring into my life from this conviction!

Hi Wendy -- often when God has told me not to complain, I've tried to look for things to thank Him for or to praise Him for. That way, if the subject comes up in conversation, I have something to say without complaining. Blessings -- Stan

    Good for you,Wendy.

Yes, it has been good for me -- pure grace. If we see only the pitfalls to avoid, it can be hrd to find our way. This is why it's so helpful when He convicts us of righteousness, showing us how to walk with Him in righteousness and peace. But I'm nothing special; if He will do it for me, He will do it for others. Richest blessings -- Stan

The Language Of Conviction

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Many people quote this verse, but what is the fear of the Lord? A good working definition is what Jesus called the conviction of the Holy Spirit. As we yield to conviction, it opens a fountain of divine wisdom to us.
