Dia de los muertos is not Halloween, Mexico-style. It's celebrated on All Souls Day (November 1) and is a Mexican family celebration to honor the memory and life of deceased relatives. Shrines are built, picnics at the cemetary are planned, dancing and celebration are the order of the day and night.

Did you ever hear of this holiday before reading this lens?
I first learned about dia de los muertos about 20 years ago, when I was browsing in a handcrafts shop in Massachusetts. The shop's display of many tiny skeleton statues, ornaments and jewelry intrigued me and caught my eye, and the small informational cards near each arrangement explained the meaning and traditions of the holiday.
