Day Trippin' #2: Oregon's Crater Lake National Park

Ranked #8,151 in Travel & Places, #217,529 overall

Oregon's Crater Lake National Park

Have you ever stumbled upon a setting that left you speechless? That's exactly why I've chosen Oregon's Crater Lake for this second lens in my Day Trippin' series. My first glimpse of Crater Lake took my breath away. We had followed a short trail to the edge of the lake, and that first glimpse of that surreal blue-green water was unforgettable.

This lens will include a bit of history of this volcanic wonder, personal photos taken during a couple of visits there, and enough travel information to hopefully lure you to this bright-blue lake if ever you visit the Pacific Northwest. And if you're fortunate enough to live in the region already, it's a perfect day trip if you hit the road bright and early.

Amazing Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Ten Reasons to Pack Up & Go

1. How often do you get to see a lake formed in the crater of an ancient collapsed volcano?

2. Take your choice of camping or staying in an historic lodge or a hotel.

3. Hike through lush, Old Growth forest.

4. Learn fascinating facts about the park, including how fire helps maintain a healthy relationship between the forest and surrounding land.

5. Discover that material possessions, no matter how much you like them, are not your richest asset.

6. Just outside the park, you can sign up for river rafting excursions lasting a half day or several days. Experience whitewater rafting at its best.

7. The Pacific Crest Trail passes through seven national parks, including Crater Lake. If you wish to hike and stay overnight, get a backcountry permit.

8. Scuba divers discover the deepest lake in the United States, and one of the clearest freshwater lakes in the world.

9. Crater Lake National Park receives over 500 inches of snow each year. Winter lasts nine full months. (Skiiers, are you listening?)

10. Avid bicyclists love the most popular bicycle route at Crater Lake--the 33-mile Rim Drive.

The mountains surrounding this amazing national park

Crater Lake is known for its amazing blue water. I took this photo on the road leading out of the park, and it translated to sepiatone well, I think. The print is available in 16x20, as well as other sizes. Choose the options that suit you best: print size, paper, matting, and framing, if you wish.

Sapphire Blue

...the color of Crater Lake

If you're heading to Crater Lake, be sure to take a jacket. Although it may be sunny and warm, the wind can shift over the frigid water and stir up quite a chill. Better to be prepared than to shiver.

I love reading the impressions of visitors to Crater Lake. Louis Macpherson, a Canadian writer, describes it this way, in an travel piece he wrote for TheStar.com:

To see the lake is to know the colour sapphire as God must have imagined it. Almost 600 metres deep (the deepest lake in the U.S. and seventh deepest on Earth) and 10 kilometres wide, it is so pure that light penetrates the first 130 metres. The edges of the rim are just as perilous as the Grand Canyon with a 300- to 600-metre vertical drop into water that is incomprehensibly cold.

Nice lens! Crater lake national park is best for a day trip, its pristine blue water ringed by cliffs covered in greenery and white snow blanket is magnificent. If you want to explore this place closely then drive up is beautiful, many mountains, rugged terrain and the gorgeous trees here create a very serene ambiance. When you walk around you feel complete silence, no noise just the soothing sound of the wind blowing which make you feel like you are in heaven. There are lots of trails to go hiking but I would suggest to just drive or walk around to enjoy the scenery.

In Crater Lake National Park, you can do fishing from the month of May till October. The timings are from morning 5am to evening 7pm. You can do fishing of any species and fishing is allowed from park boat docks except when a boat is within 200 feet of the dock. Fishing is prohibited in Sun Creek starting three miles upstream from the junction of Sun Creek and the park boundary, and extending three miles upstream, as posted.
