Day Trips for Children

After the kids have been in school all year, there's nothing more exciting to them than those breaks they have worked so hard to earn. While they may be just as content to stay home, sleep-in, and play video games all day, it's important to take a trip together as a family just to get away. Maybe you don't have the means to take a super long vacation; after all, you have your own demands at work and can't easily take time off for days. However, you can still experience the fun of a family trip without spending lots of time and money on overnight trips. Take a "day trip" with the kids!

There are several excellent options for a day trip with children, no matter where you live. Pack up the kids with a picnic lunch and head to the lake. Kids love to have picnics outside and will enjoy fishing, swimming, and other activities lakes and parks provide. Not only will this give you a chance to save money, but the kids will be active outside rather than glued to the television set.

Amusements

Children also love water rides and amusement parks! This may cost a bit more money than a day trip to a local lake, but it still gives the children an opportunity to play outside and exercise while having fun. In fact, you may just see the kid in YOU brought out by visiting an amusement park. What better way to have fun as a family?

Educational

When planning a day trip with children, there is nothing wrong with focusing on an educational aspect while having fun. However, don't tell your children that! You could plan a day trip to an aquarium, where children will be amazed by watching the sea life while learning about their species, habitats, and environments. Look for children's museums, where kids experience the excitement of science by learning through hands-on activities. You could take your children to a space museum of there's one within driving distance. There, they can experience life as an astronaut while learning about astronomy and the history of space flight.

Packing

Another thing to consider when taking a day trip with children is what to bring along with you. It's not uncommon to see parents loaded down with bags upon bags of stuff when there's children present. However, you don't have to pack everything but the kitchen sink for a day trip. Be sure to pack a small tote bag with water or fruit juice, and healthy snacks the kids can munch on during the trip. Avoid sugary snacks and drinks, as this will only attribute to the child's being hyper and not really enjoying the day trip. Pack sunscreen if you plan to be outdoors.

Adults and children alike can benefit from taking a day trip together. It's a win-win situation; kids aren't stuck inside watching TV and adults get to see their child be active, have fun, and even learn a few things!
