Daylight Saving Time Sucks

I Hate Daylight Saving Time

On May 5th I looked out the window and saw that it was still very light out. The time was 8:30 PM. It felt unnatural.

In the US we observe Daylight Saving Time (DST): We change our clocks an hour ahead on the second Sunday of March, then we adjust them an hour back on the last Sunday in October. Supposedly this helps us conserve energy.

Trouble is, it doesn't work. A recent study in Indiana showed that DST actually wastes more energy. Indiana was a prime candidate for this study, since until a few years ago the state only had a few weirdo counties that practiced DST. As of 2006, the entire state uses DST. The study showed that Hoosiers started using more electricity, boosting electric bills an extra $8.6 million a year.

Of course, there's also the argument that the Indiana findings don't necessarily apply to all states. Nonetheless, I stand by my conviction that Daylight Saving Time sucks.

Why Daylight Saving Time Sucks

  • You have to remember to change the darn clocks. All of them.

  • Screws with your brain and internal rhythm. All of a sudden we've "lost" an hour, and now we have to go to bed earlier! Just when I'm starting to get used to it, it's time to change the clocks again.

  • "Springing ahead" increases fatal car accidents for a few days. This has a lot to do with sleep deprivation.

  • Actually wastes more energy, at least in warmer states that use air conditioning during the summer.

  • It's bad for cows and dairy farmers. The cows don't care what the silly clock says; they still need a consistent milking schedule.

Hey, I like DST!

You're right, it sucks.

SusanVillasLewis says:

Amen!! It's antiquated and keeps me from getting the maximum daylight in the non-work hours. I don't care if I go to work in the dark. I do care that I can't play with my dogs when I get home because the time changed. Boo!!

Who Thought of Daylight Saving Time?

We have Benjamin Franklin to thank for coming up with the idea of Daylight Saving Time though. Don't be too hard on him, though; he was just feeling whimsical one day and wrote a satirical piece, making fun of Parisians for burning through so many candles. He also expressed mock amazement that the sun always rose at 6AM, well before he usually got up himself.

Benjamin Franklin proposed one ludicrous idea after another to help Paris conserve candles, including changing the clocks, waking people up at dawn by firing cannons, and posting guards outside of shops to prevent people from buying candles.

Benjamin Franklin may have been the first to come up with the idea of Daylight Saving Time, but he didn't take it seriously!

I've also heard that Ben Franklin liked to sleep late. And he's the one credited for that "early to bed, early to rise" quote!

Daylight savings time makes no sense. Time to change it.
Safety and security are always topic priority. If a business or property owner in Houston, Texas, it is wise investment to hire Security Guards Houston for armed and unarmed guards. In Austin Texas, personal and commercial security services can be hired at Austin Security Guards for private patrol, retail and plant security.

San Antonio Security Guards are available for armed and unarmed service for communities and businesses.
