Dragonball Evolution - It's as bad as fans predicted!

Bored! I feel absolutely bored after watching Dragonball Evolution.

If I haven't watched anime before, I will definitely feel more bored. The movie explains NOTHING. Things just happen! For instance, Piccolo somehow managed to break out of imprisonment, however, the hows and whys of are never explained.

Some characters are totally unimportant in the movie. One is Yamcha. I'm so disappointed with how this character is drawn out in the movie. All he does is to deliver unfunny punchlines and become Bulma's love interest 12 hours after meeting her. Real Crap. I also feel that Chi Chi is quite an useless role. But well, at least she's more useful than Yamcha.

There's a lot wrong with Dragonball Evolution, but the one huge thing that overrides nearly everything else is the script! It is an absolute disaster. If you haven't watch the anime before or haven't heard of Dragonball, you will understand nothing as they explain virtually nothing. If you are a Dragonball fan, you will think of this movie as an insult to your dearest Dragonball.

In terms of special effects, I think it's plain awful. The Oozaru and Shen Long they create are awful. The 'Kamehame ha' effects are badly done too. I was so shocked by its lousy quality that I literally LOL.

It's hard to blame the actors for their mediocre performances. In the first place, no one really expects much from them. I still think Justin Chatwin is a bad choice for Goku. He's not athletic enough and his 'Kamehama ha' is so bad and weak that it's laughable. I can definitely shout out 'Kamehame ha' better than him. The guy playing Yamcha, Joon Park, is just plain bad. He looks more like a gangster. Chow Yun Fatt does what he can, but I guess this role is just not very suitable for him.

In conclusion, I don't think anyone will like this movie. It's a waste of time to watch it. It's as bad as the fans predicted!

What do you think of the Casting?

When the casting news was out, I was shocked! It was not exactly what I had expected. Some casting is pretty good but others just seem weird. I certainly do hope the actors can carry off their roles.

Here are some of my personal opinions:


Justin Chatwin vs. Goku

I always thought an Asian actor will act as Goku. Justin Chatwin?! That's a shock! Also, I prefer someone more beefy to act as Goku. Look at Goku, he is muscular and look at Justin Chatwin, he is.. lean and thin.


Chow Yun Fatt vs. Master Roshi

My favorite Asian actor acting as my favorite Dragonball character. As you can see from the pictures, Master Roshi in the movie will not have a turtle shell. That makes sense as the movie is based in modern society. This could either be the greatest casting ever or the most terrible one. It's Chow Yun Fat so I think he can pull it off. ^^ (I may be a little biased =P)


Jamie Chung vs. Chi Chi

I only have a vague impression of Jamie Chung acting as a Hooters girl in 'I now Pronounce you Chucky and Larry'. I seriously wonder if she can pull off as Goku's love interest, Chi Chi. She seems a little too sexy to act as Chi Chi.


James Marsters vs. Piccolo

The make up is wonderful. It makes James Marsters look just like Piccolo. James Marsters has acted as a vampire in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' so this kind of role is no stranger to him. I look forward to see how he acts.


Joon Park vs. Yamcha

Nothing much to comment on as I am not familiar with Joon Park. All I know is he is a Korean. He does seem rugged enough to act as Yamcha.

P.S Do you know Yamcha means Drinking tea in Cantonese? I wonder if Akira Toriyama knows about it? He seems interested in Chinese culture.


Emmy Rossum vs. Bulma

I enjoy Emmy Rossum's performance in 'Phantom of the Opera'. I am looking forward to her new role. She seems to be a suitable candidate for the role of Bulma. Let's hope she lives up to the expectation.


Eriko Tamura vs. Mai

I'm glad they have at least one Japanese in the casting. It wouldn't make sense if they have no Japanese in a movie adaptation of a Japanese anime/manga. Eriko Tamura is quite well-known in Japan and I think she suits the role of Mai. Look at the pictures, they look alike!
