Failure to Appear

When you fail to show up for court, there may be serious repercussions. Regardless of the reasons behind your DC failure to appear, a bench warrant can be immediately issued for your arrest. The penalty you face depends largely on the proceedings you missed. For instance, if you fail to appear on a traffic citation, you could lose your license and be immediately arrested if you are pulled over. On the other hand, if you fail to appear on a case you were previously granted bail on, your bond can be forfeited and you can be held in jail until the resolution of that particular case is reached-no matter how long it takes.
Failing to appear in DC traffic or criminal courts is a serious matter. Working with a DC criminal defense lawyer to take a proactive approach in the matter can prevent some of the longer term effects. Whether you've already been arrested on the charge or if you are out on bond, afraid of coming forward, discussing your case with an experienced DC attorney is a good first step.
