Green Arrow Has Been Around Awhile

Most of today's Green Arrow fans were introduced to him in Season Six of the TV hit Smallville, but Green Arrow has a history that goes all the way back to More Fun Comics #73 in 1941. Created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp, Green Arrow had no super powers. As Batman did, he fought evil with his wits. Unlike Batman, he didn't have an arsenal of weapons - he only had the arrows in his quiver. For the first twenty-five years of his comic book life, Green Arrow was relegated to the second string of DC characters and was the back-up feature in comics like More Fun, Adventure and World's Finest. Only five of DC's super heroes appeared in comics without a hiatus from the Golden Age to the present - Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Green Arrow.

Green Arrow has been around a long time, and Smallville insures that he will be around a lot longer - maybe in a Smallville spin-off series, or his own movie. The possibilities for this character are endless.

The Origin of Green Arrow

The first story of Green Arrow's origin wasn't told until issue #89 of More Fun Comics in 1943. Oliver Queen was a millionaire playboy who lived the life of the idle rich until he fell off his yacht and washed up on a desert island. He fashioned a bow and arrow and with a lot of practice he became a very good archer. One day some pirates found his island and he used his archery skills to capture them. Soon after Queen returned to civilization, he became bored with living life without a purpose. After capturing a robber at a charity ball he decided to use his archery skills to defend Star City. He devised every type of arrow imaginable - a net arrow, a glue arrow, a tear gas arrow, time bomb arrow, a boxing glove arrow, and the list goes on and on.

Green Arrow didn't fight crime alone, He had a teenaged sidekick called Speedy. Speedy's real identity was Roy Harper. Raised by Navajo Indians, Speedy was also a talented archer.

“Green Arrow's sidekick Speedy became addicted to heroin in a controversial 1970's story.”

Smallville's Green Arrow

The origin of Green Arrow has been retold and altered several times to suit changing times. The Green Arrow of the Smallville series is yet another updated origin. Smallville's Green Arrow doesn't play second to anybody. In the first origin of the Justice League of America he wasn't a founding member. In Smallville's retelling, Green Arrow is the unofficial leader of the JLA. The fact that rights couldn't be secured to the characters Wonder Woman, Batman, or Flash (Bart Allen is Impulse in Smallville) might be part of the reason, but it is still a nice change to have Green Arrow in charge for a change.

Oliver Queen has a hidden chamber in his office at Queen Towers where he keeps his bow and arsenal of arrows, along with his Green Arrow outfit. Sounds a little like the Batcave. The similarities don't stop there.

not bad, but there is so much more you could have gone into, like the awesome Mike Grell period (the longbow hunters), the part where he died and his son became Green Arrow, his return, marriage to Black Canary and more.

Still it is the only Green Arrow lens. Kudos to you!

Funny, I had never heard of Green Arrow until last week when a young client of mine told me about him. I was confused with Green Lantern. And now here he is again. Hmmm...Well done, informative five stars to you!

And did you know that GA and GL hung around for awhile? There were even a few issues of Green Lantern/Green Arrow that were not CCA approved.
