Zeke's DDR Road Trip 2010

When we decided to drive instead of fly for our summer vacation this year, we asked ourselves: What should we do along the way? Since this is a graduation road trip for Zeke as well as a family vacation, and Zeke loves to check out Dance Dance Revolution arcade machines wherever he finds them, we thought combining the two would be the way to go.

With a little help from DDR Freak to find DDR machines along our route, we put together what turned out to be an incredibly fun itinerary. All told, we danced on 13 machines from Indiana to New York and back. We even managed to be on the National Mall in Washington, DC for National Dance Day!

The DDR Road Trip Map

Hoosier Lanes

New Albany, IN

Our first dance stop along the DDR Roadtrip was at Hoosier Lanes in New Albany, IN. After a couple of hours of driving, it was the perfect way to stretch our legs and get the blood flowing.

Gattitown

Lexington, KY

We stopped at Gattitown for a little dinner and dancing. For my friends in St. Louis, Gattitown is a lot like the Incredible Pizza Company. (In fact, it was pretty much the same except for the name!)

Tilt (in the Huntington Mall)

Barboursville, WV

After a late breakfast, we started the day off with some dancing at the Huntington Mall in Barboursville. Really got the blood flowing, helped us get through the long day of driving to Alexandria.

Ultra Zone

Bailey's Crossroads, VA

Heading out of Alexandria, we made our first stop at the Ultra Zone. We didn't have time for any laser tag, but we did get some dancing in. A great way to end a great weekend in the DC area.

Regent's Cinema

Newark, DE

Along the route to NJ was Regent's Cinema in Newark, DE (that's new-ark, not new-erk), with the game right up front by the glass. It was kind of fun dancing right there in the open, though the sun did cause just a bit of glare.

Jenkinson's Arcade

Point Pleasant Beach, NJ

Jenkinson's Arcade on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach is one of our old stomping grounds from when we lived up in NJ. It was great to get back to the beach and to all of the fun and food there. Oh yeah, and the dancing too!

Dave and Buster's

New York, NY

Our trip to Alexandria and Washington, DC was all about the museums, the culture, the food. Our trip to NYC, though, was all about the dancing and all about the games. Dave and Buster's was an absolute must.

Toys 'R' Us

New York, NY

Following our lunch and dancing at Dave and Busters, and a nice walk that included stops at Nintendo World and Rockefeller Plaza, we stopped by the Times Square Toys 'R' Us for one last dance in the city.

We did some dancing down in the "zone" in the basement, and then found a bonus on the 2d floor not too far from the Star Wars section: another SuperNOVA machine!

Sports Emporium

Carlisle, PA

After surviving the driving out of the Garden State, we stopped at the Sports Emporium in Carlisle. A great way to break up the long (l o n g) drive to Columbus.

Magic Mountain Fun Center

Columbus, OH

On our way out of Columbus, on our last leg of the journey, we stopped in at the Magic Mountain Fun Center to once again get the blood flowing. We knew we'd find one DDR machine there, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that there are actually two DDR machines there. Needless to say, we spent a little bit of time there before getting back on the road.

Time Out (in the Honey Creek Mall)

Terre Haute, IN

Our final stop on the DDR Roadtrip, the DDR Extreme machine at the Time Out in the Honey Creek Mall in Terre Haute was a great finish. It looked and felt like a pretty new machine, which was perfect since the boys were dancing for the "championship". (In case you are wondering, Ian won.)

Which is your favorite?

Choose from games along our route

Along our journey we danced on 4 different types of DDR machines, and one other (non-DDR) machine - In the Groove 2. Which one do you like the best?

Love the photos and your map of your itinerary. I had never even heard of DDR before and now at least I will recognize when I see one! I might even try it! BTW I grew up right down the road from Baileys Crossroads but that was back when dinosaurs roamed the earth; I'm pretty sure the machines didnt exist bck then

The trip was almost as much fun to plan - and document - as it was to actually travel. Speaking of dinosaurs, I'm sure you noticed we actually saw some of those as well!

Thanks for stopping by, and very happy you enjoyed the lens.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to seeing more on your lens about the fun - and benefits - of DDR games.

Other stops along the way

More than dancing

While we stopped and danced at 13 different arcade dance machines, there was much more to see and do along our 2300 mile road trip. From the fun - and unusual - things we discovered at roadsideamerica.com to the museums in Washington, DC to the Statue of Liberty and Nintendo World in NYC, this was a great trip.
