Dead Zones aren't Science Fiction
When I wrote this lens about dead zones, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico hadn't yet happened. Dead zones are very real and this current disaster has the potential to create the biggest one yet.
Did you know that there are dead zones that occur along many of the world's coastlines? They are areas of water where the oxygen concentrations in the water are too low to sustain life. Our oceans are so huge that it seems like nothing can hurt them. The awful truth is that what we do on land has a huge impact on their health. The more we become aware of what is happening to the world around us, the better chance we have of fixing the problem. This Earth is our home and we can no longer assume that nature can heal it unless we consider the impact of our actions.
What A Dead Zone Is - In Plain English
In other words, if we control the amount of organic waste we are allowing to enter our rivers, we can control the size of the dead zone that is formed. They are seasonal because the crops are fertilized on a seasonal basis but as our farming moves further and further from organic practices, more and more fertilizer is needed. At what point do we tip the balance and cause permanent damage?
Will the Entire Gulf of Mexico become a Dead Zone?
What will 100 million gallons of oil do to it?
When I started this lens, I had no idea that we would be facing the oil well disaster that the Gulf of Mexico is facing today. Much has been said about the 100 million gallons of crude that is spewing out of the hole in the ground caused by the exploded well BP was drilling. The oil is bad enough but from what I am hearing, there are a lot of other gasses coming up with the oil that could have an even greater impact. One article talks about the amount of methane that is forming in concentrated amounts there.
Another one talks about natural gas and what it could potentially do.
The point is, no one really knows what is happening or the long term effects we will face from it. Oil might end up being the least of our problems.
Dead Zones Occur World Wide
It's not just an American thing...

The Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone is one of the largest in the world. It starts building every Spring and reaches its peak in July, tapering off in September. Knowing that it is seasonal means that we can affect it. The bad news is that it isn't the only one. Other dead zones are found through out the world and need cleaning up just as much as this one does.
