Deadliest Catch New Season

The new season of Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch begins on April 15, 2009.

The popular series has introduced a large audience to the Bering Sea crab fishery and has been a positive influence for the industry.

The new season will feature extensive footage of Dutch Harbor and more exciting action in the Bearing Sea.

About the Alaska Crab Fishery

The crabbing documented on the Deadliest catch television series is regulated thru an individual fishing quota (IFQ) program.

Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) programs are a type of limited access privilege program (LAPP), which provide individual fishermen or corporations the exclusive privilege to harvest a certain percentage of the total allowable catch (TAC) of a fishery.

IFQ programs allow shares to be bought and sold. IFQ's have been recognized as as an effective way to manage stocks of wild seafood.

The Bush Administration's Ocean Action Plan seeks to to double the number of LAPPs by the year 2010.

American IFQ programs include The Mid-Atlantic surf clam and ocean quahog IFQ (1990), The South Atlantic wreckfish IFQ (1992), The Alaskan halibut and North Pacific sablefish IFQ (1995), The Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands crab rationalization program (2005) and the Gulf of Mexico Commercial Red Snapper Fishery Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) Program.

2007/2008 Crabbing

These are crab quotas for the 2007-08 season, from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Crab harvests begin from Oct. 15, 2007 and end varying with species.

The Bering Sea snow crab quota will increase from 36.57 million pounds to 63.03 million pounds. The fishery will be open through March 31, 2008.

The Bristol Bay red king crab quota will increase from 15.53 million pounds last season to 20.38 million pounds this season. The fishery will be open through Jan. 15.

The tanner crab quota will increase to 3.45 million pounds in the eastern Bering Sea and 2.18 million pounds in the western Bering Sea. The fishery will remain open through March 31.

A 450 pot per vessel limit applies to all three Alaskan crab fisheries.

Crab rationalization, which was enacted for the 2005-06 fishery, involves individual fishing quotas which are allotted to established vessel owners. This method replaces the competitive derby-style system.

The new crab rationalization system has its pros and cons. The issue remains a matter of contention among commercial crabbers in Alaska.

Where do the crabs go?

The crabs caught during the filming of "Deadliest Catch" are typically sold on the open market. One restaurant chain has decided to buy an entire boat load of crabs.

The Oceanaire Seafood Room purchased the catch of Bering Sea king crabs trapped by the Time Bandit. The catch amounted to roughly 40,000 pounds of frozen king crab clusters after processing.

"It made sense from a marketing and sustainability standpoint to 'bite off more than we can chew' with Alaska crab, because it is an important fishery and it's a limited harvesting season," said Wade Wiestling. "We knew the quality and the way it was processed would be a great story for our staff on the floor."
