I'm a "Deadliest Catch" Addict...Are you?

I love crab! Nothing like putting on a bib and slothing over some fresh boiled crab dipped in hot butter!
For 2 years I have tuned in to the eye-catching drama of "The Deadliest Catch" watching the brave captains and hard-working crewmen aboard these wave-beaten fishing ships, fishing for crab in the Bering Sea!
It's such a good show that it even keeps my husband from nodding off into snoresville after a long day at work!
Last weekend I came to the realization that...I'm addicted! I admit it. Addicted to the History Channel show, "The Deadliest Catch." (Actually we get it here on A&E.) After a long week of work and workouts, I didn't feel guilty at all that I had sat down in front of my television in the early afternoon and had watched "The Deadliest Catch" until 10 p.m. Episode after episode kept me there with the intense drama that goes on on the show. All the while I am in deep wonder that these guys do this to put crab on the dinner table of hundreds and thousands of people and they totally risk each day of their lives to do it.
So, with all this said, I guess I am a "Deadliest Catch" addict!
And since I have made this lens, I found out that my father-in-law is addicted to The Deadliest Catch as well! Are you?

Deadliest Catch Is Deadliest Job

No easy kill!

According to CNN/Money magazine, fishing is the second most deadliest and dangerous job in the world!
According to Gunnar Knapp of the University of Alaska, "The environment in which the crabbing is done, in the Bering Sea, in winter, has to be some of the worst conditions on Earth. You're hundreds of miles from port, in stormy seas, with ice forming all over, sometimes so thick it capsizes the boat."
Fishermen sustain injuries from working with heavy gear and machinery. Alaskan crabbers use huge cages as traps that weigh hundreds of pounds of steel per pot.

No wonder the Alaskan shellfish industry averaged 400 fatalities per 100,000 workers during the 1990s. Many dying of drowning and hypothermia which can occur in just seconds after touching the harsh temperatures of the sea.

The fishermen fish for as much crab they can get in the least amount of time as the season doesn't last long.

At the end of the crabbing season, if the season was good, the crewman can earn upwards of $1,000 a day for his well-earned hard work.

"The Deadliest Catch" documents the reality of crab fishing in the Bering Sea near Alaska. Dutch Harbor is the "watering-hole" for the fishermen and the base port of their fishing operations. The show is filmed aboard the fishing vessels.

It's January (now February) and you know what that means: Opilio crab fishing has begun! The season is well underway and the guys are doing what they do best out on the big, bad Bering. They're on the hunt for Chionoecetes opilio -- also known as snow crab.

It's tasty. It's wonderful. It's a way of life.

Update's On the Cornelia Maria's Captain

Captain Phil Harris

After last week's episode of the Deadliest Catch, I couldn't help myself, but to dig a bit and see how our Captain Phil is fairing?!
Last week, Tuesday, June 24th, most of the show time went (with great respect) to the Cornilia Marie and ships Captain Phil after he slid out of bed and puncture a lung and was coughing up blood the whole episode. I don't know about anyone else, but I couldn't wait till next week or next season to find out if he's allright!
Here's what I found...
According to Access Atlanta, Phil said,"Everything in my body aches. It takes me 20 minutes to get out of bed every morning. I've had Marines come on the boat. They say this makes boot camp look like a picnic." The article goes on to say that he did puncture a lung and broke his ribs. But his condition worsened after a blood clot dislodged and traveled to his heart. He almost died from a pulmonary aneurysm, and the remains of the clot are still life-threatening.
Phil, "I'm eating massive amounts of medicine to break down the clot. I take them every day and pray."

I originally was going to link to the article, but when I tried it with HTML, here, and went back to see if the link worked, they wanted a bunch of login information. Sorry I couldn't help with that!

Me? Crab Fishing?

My Addiction Turned Inspiration to Action

Yes, but not exactly like the men in the Deadliest Catch!

Crab fishing season just started here in Bellingham, Wa. My husband and I decided to give it a try. We found that crab fishing in our neck of the woods is simple compared to what the boys on the Deadliest Catch go through...
However, it is a great experience and we plan to do more crab fishing throughout the season here.
Our first time out we came home with 6 legal size crab right out of Bellingham Bay!
What I mean by "legal" is that the crab you catch, whether commercial crab fishing or regular people like you or me out crabbing, we all have legal standards for size of crab you can keep.
Around here we can keep 5 crab per day and the crab need to be at the very least 6 1/4 inches arcross the shell and they have to be a male. No females can be "legally" kept! Rock crab has to be only 5 inches across the shell to be a keeper and the limit per day for rock crab is 6 per person per day.
My husband and I enjoy crab fishing.
It is a lot of fun and has increased our love and respect for those who crab fish commercially out on the raging Bering Sea, like on the Deadliest Catch.
Around here we can get Rock Crab and Dungeoness Crab.
On the Deadliest Catch, the men fish for Alaska King Crab (big crab!) and Oplilio Crab is caught only in the Bering Sea.
Since we have a new found love for the sport of crabbing, we also have started a website for crab lover's alike called Crab-O-Licious Drop by sometime and find more information about other types of crab and some really good crab recipes!

Hey Beverly, Cool lens. I've watched Deadliest Catch, never really got into it. My uncle used to own a Scallop boat in Port Townsend and we used to go out with him. Though scallop fishing in the Sound is a little different than the Bering Sea;) lol ~Jesse
