Dealing with a collection agency is not a fun task for most.  With the intimidating phone calls and threatening letters it is enough to terrify most anyone.  That is why I am creating this guide to help people deal with collection agencies.

I am not an attorney but my advice will be based around the laws that govern collection agencies and personal experiences.  My opinions should not be construed as legal advice, but as a layman's guide to dealing with a collection agency.

If you are willing to do a little work yourself you can make collection agencies stop calling you and get them off of your credit report and maybe pick up some cash from a collection agency that breaks the law.

Collection Agency 'P.O Box 1839, Maryland Heights, Missouri, 63043' keep calling for the money that I owed to their client 'Carus Dental Rejouce' for dental service. Turly that was the mistake from the billing department of the dental office so I send paper with all the explanation on the billing charges for my daughter. Now they says OH!!!... The charges is not for your daughter dental service, it was for your dental service. Well, There was no service done for me for stated billing date. Collection agency do not want to here any things and mark my credit as "mark accordingly" for not paying the payment. does any one know what is "Mark accordingly" mean? and how to deal with this kind of situation? What are my options? This thing going on for last one year and truly I am seeking for help over this

A lawyer called stating he was taking us to court over non-payment of a medical bill. We have been making payments since recieving the first bill. We obviously can't pay the entire bill at once, but we pay what we can each month. Can they really sue us when we are making payments?

hi, I received acollection letter for credit card debt (which I didn't know of) from 3/2006. the collection amount is $1998. I have no idea how it happened, but i guess we missed one payment. And we never go any letter from the CC bank before. anyways... I called Citi and they said the acount is not active and I should call the collection agency. I called the collection agency and wanted to know what was the ORIGINAL debt. how much I owed the CC bank originally. They of course refused to give the info. Now I don't know whether I should pay or not. The original debt might been $150 or $200... who knows. and how should I know what exactly they added there? They just refused to give all of this info. What to do now????

I disputed a debt with a collection agency and they served me a subpoena, I guess to just file an answer. I hired an attorney and he filed our answer on 9/10/08. We still have not heard back from the opposing counsel and in the mean time they've added a negative mark on my credit. How can they do this if I am disputting and now we can't even get their attorney's to call my attorney back. Is this legal?

I co-signed on a car 4 my husband 2 drive n another state. He did not come return home & is soon 2 b my x. He purchased the car n 11/05, then totaled the car n 10/05 & stopped making payments n 11/06. The car was repossessed n 5/06. Up until a few days ago, I had no knowledge of this info as he told me nothing. A collection agency got n touch w/me about it. This was collection agency #3. I did not hear from the bank, or the other 2 agencies, ever. The contract apparently had my add. down as the same as my husbands.
    BUT, I have worked 4 the same company 4 10 yrs, 9 1/2 yrs n Wn & 1/2 yr n Tx.
    Here's my questions?
How can I fight this? The amt is now $6000. That I am sure includes late fees & interest upon interest.
Plus, do I hv a rt 2 get the car back.
Why wld a bank repossess a total car?

Here recently a collection agency wiped my account clean without me knowing it. The person said he tried to reach me at an address that I lived at 6 years ago. What I don't understand is why they couldn't get the information from the bank to find out my current address. This was suppossed to have been garnished from my checks and was for 3 years. But when I changed to a new job and still held on to the other as a side job the garnishment stopped. I was never notified nor didn't think to check my stubs because I just assummed the garnishment was still being taken out. My question is why are collection agencies allowed to get into your account and take all of your money without any notification from the bank? This is very furiating.

A collection agency, claims that I owe a Bank a small amount, under $100. The information I retreived from my credit bureau report listed that the dept was incurred on Dec. 2007, but I never had an account with the bank named, in 2007.

Without any contact what-so-ever from the alleged bank and the collection agency, the collection agency sumitted my name to a credit bureau as a collection account.

Has this credit bureau done something that is illegal? Can I sue them? Can I make a complaint to my local Condumer Affairs Bureau.

    Thanks in advance,
    Robert

I have a collection agency who has called my home numerous times and spoken to me. However, they recently called my landlord looking for me. My name is not attached to the lease at this address, nor have I ever used my landlord as a reference. Is this something that they have a right to do? Does this mean they are now searching my address looking for a contact?

I have a agency telling me I made a payment on a debt back in 2004. I got copies of my past statements and there is no indication of this. My understanding there is a statue of limitations on collecting a debt. Can you varify. They have been calling me at work as well. What are my options.
