Deal With Stress

Deal With Stress and feel better!  Stress is a word that is in nearly everybody's mond. The hectic rat race all day long takes it's toll on people and their well being.

Stress can be dealt with effciently, once you understand what causes your stress. Dealing with stress is a process, that can be  learned and applied by everybody, irrespective of your age, sex, education and outside influences.

Stress comes from a painful situation and people cannot deal with it right away.  It's usually triggering a feeling of not being able to do what's needed, or not knowing what to do to remedy the situation. This by itself triggers more stress and it's easily starting a viscious circle of stress reinforcing stress.

But stress does not need to end in such a circle that turns endlessly. Stress Relief is only a few steps away!  (... and no, it's not the solution in the illustration above  ;-)  )

There are a number of truly helpful audio books about stress that are immediately downloadable online.

Symptoms Of Stress

How Stress Affects Your Wellbeing

Stress manifests itself in a subjective feeling of being under pressure and having a hard time to cope. The conveived physical and psychologal symptoms are different from one person to the next, so it's difficult to analyze stress by asking people how they feel alone.

Stress can be measured scientifically by different means:

One scietific stress measurement system is the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale to rate stressful life events. (See special text block further down)

When we are under stress our blood pressure and the galvanic (electircal) skin response changes. This can also be measured to test changes in stress levels.

A digital thermometer can be used to evaluate changes in skin temperature, which can indicate activation of the fight or flight response drawing blood away from the extremities.

The Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale

A Scientific Way Of Measuring Stress Through Changes In Ones Personal Life

To measure your stress according to the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale, add up the number of "Life Change Units" that apply to events that you have experienced over the last year. The score that you receive will give you a rough estimate of how your stress affects your health.

Here are a few of the events that can cause stress and the corresponding 'Life Change Units' that are attributed to an event:

Life Event = Life Change Units
---------------------------------
Death of a Spouse = 100
Divorce = 73
Marital Separation = 65
Imprisonment = 63
Death of a Close Family Member = 63
Personal Injury or Illness = 53
Marriage = 50
[...]
Change in Sleeping Habits = 16
Change in Number of Family Reunions = 15
Change in Eating Habits = 15
Vacation = 13
Christmas = 12
Minor Violation of Law = 11

The number of units and the events are different for adults and children.
