Helping children be kind to each other

Everyone encounters bullies, no matter what age they are. A bully can be someone who calls you names, is violent towards you, or even just someone who makes you feel inferior to them by their snotty remarks. Warm-Hearted Walrus is a Character from the nonprofit organization Characters of Character. Warm-Hearted Walrus helps children understand what kindness means, the importance of being kind, and internalize kindness as a force of habit. It is imperative that a child is introduced to what kindness is at an early age, and continues to be around positive reinforcements in terms of how to be kind.

Warm-Hearted Walrus received a letter from a child who was having trouble with a friend who was beginning to treat her poorly. Watch the video to find out a few ways to deal with bullies, print your own free kindness activity, and learn more about being kind. This video is a great resource for educators, as well as parents to use at home. Don't just watch the video, engage your children or students with a discussion and open the lines of communication. Communication is a huge factor in trust. Your children and/or students should be able to confide in you when they are facing a problem. This will help problems to be resolved early on, instead of letting them build until it becomes a more serious problem. Don't forget to leave your feedback for this video at the bottom of the page. Your feedback helps our organization,Characters of Character, to continue to improve our resources so that they are benefiting you the most.

Who is Warm-Hearted Walrus?

Warm-Hearted Walrus teaches children the meaning of kindness, and how to deal with bullies. Kindness promotes a positive attitude, encouraging others to be happy and feel good about themselves. It also gives someone the ability to help others when they have not stood up for themselves, builds high self-esteem, prevents serious social issues like suicide, opens someone up to being helped by other, creates better communication and a positive work environment, and eliminates and prevents future crimes by instilling remorse in others for negative behavior.

What to do if you're being bullied

Here is a typed version of the information provided in the video above. These are only a few ways to deal with bullies. Please note that every situation is different. If you or someone that you know is being bullied, tell an adult that you can trust and explain exactly what is going on so that you can discuss how to handle that specific situation.

  • Tell an adult: Bullying isn't something to be taken lightly and it is not something to ignore. Always tell an adult, a parents, teacher, or someone else that you can trust, when you or someone that you know is being bullied.
  • Be confident: Did you know that most bullies are mean to others because they are insecure with themselves? Be confident with who YOU are, no matter what others are saying to you. The most important thing to understand when dealing with a bully is that you know that YOU are a good person. Never let anyone else make you feel little, be confident with the person that you are.
  • Be a buddy: Never pass your anger on to anyone else. Be sure to always be a buddy and never treat a bully the way that they treat you.
  • Be kind: Don't hurt someone else's feelings. Everyone needs a friend. Sometimes a bully needs a friend, too.
  • Walk away: The best thing to do when dealing with a bully is to walk away and not let that person feed off of your reactions. If you ignore a bully and don't let them see that they are hurting your feelings, they will realize that you are a strong person and will most likely leave you alone.

Has your friend recently become a bully?

If you are like Marisa (the letter in the video) and your friend recently started to become increasingly mean to you, there might be a problem. If your friend recently started to be a bully, express your feelings to them. Sometimes people start acting out because of a drastic change in their own life. Try to talk to them and see if you can help. If they do not change, maybe they are not really your friend at all. Surround yourself with positive and kind people!

Warm Hearted Walrus will help us all to be a buddy and not a bully, this is such an important and potentially life saving topic in the world today. May we all come up higher and point in that upward direction.

As a child I learned two things about bullies: Sometimes a bully is insecure, as you say, and a warm smile and friendly demeanor can win a bully's heart and loyalty. Those tactics worked for me many times.

Sometimes a bully is so mean, that no smiles; no informing adults; no feigning confidence when you've been beat up before; and no walking away can prevent being punched, knocked down, and bloodied--or worse.

Your video is helpful for the milder type of bully. I doubt it would give much hope or useful tools to a small child who is the subject of routine physical and psychological abuse from much larger bullies. I have not perused your web site yet, but I trust there will be tools there to help a child who is taunted and beaten by older, bigger bullies who feel entitled to take out their rage on weaker children.

You are truly devoted to this topic and I applaud that. We will have a little girl starting kindergarten in a year or so and I know this will be an issue somewhere along the way.
