Depression and what it means to me

All my life I have had to deal with depression. I for one, dislike taking antidepressants as the side effects seem to hit me hard. Depression is something we all deal with at some point in our lives. It is like that feeling of nothing good is ever going to happen. As I have gotten older I have come to a few conclusions that I feel might be worth sharing to those that deal with depression.

First thing is this, if you have the feeling of hurting yourself or others PLEASE seek help. Depression is a part of life for some more then others however there are many resources around to get help. Talking to someone you trust is super important and getting your feelings out helps all of us. Being heard, sometimes is all a person truly needs.

I tend to have the winter blues in the winter... For me I have realized seeing pictures of sunny places and looking at the good in my life seems to help me deal with the sadness I feel when Mr. Sun is not out a lot. Exercise is another form of treatment I have used for myself. Creating endorphins can help repair the way the brain is thinking thus help symptoms of depression seem easier to bear.

Finding an exericse you enjoy

When I first told myself that I wanted to help cure my own depression what I did was look at activities I use to do when I was young that made me happy. First thing on my list....riding bikes. This was a favorite pastime of mine from the age of about 4 on up. Yes, I rode a bike with training wheels at a very young age, at least I thought I was... So knowing depression is something I deal with daily I purchased a nice old school looking bike, and made the effort to start off small. Say ten minutes a day. Building my way up I was bike riding around 3 to 5 miles a day, and was loving it. You may want to do what I did, or you may find another way. No matter big nor small find something you enjoy and roll with it.

Good days and bad

Everyday can be a challenge when we have depression. Most days I try to take my feelings in stride. What I mean is I starting asking myself a few direct questions that are important to ask... Will I be upset about this one year from now? Can I do something today, that will make my day better or someone else's day better. Depression is that feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do it. That life is boring, sad, uneventful. In all reality life sometimes can be those things. However we should look at the good in our day too... Nature, our family, our jobs... some people tend to look only at the bad and not anything that is good in their life.

Today seems like a good day for me. I have enegry and feel that writing helps me get my feelings laid out on the table. So find a hobby, something you LIKE, that can change your mood for today.

Endorphin...hey they are free

Endorphins are those feeling good emotions that the body transmits to the brain in order for us to deal with pain, and that feel good feeling. Using the body's own system could help be a key in helping people with depression. This is why exercise is important, when you exercise your body releases it thus creating that feel good feeling. Any exercise is better then nothing. One question you should ask yourself is what do you like doing. I prefer to ride a bike, but took up walking daily as a way to release anger, sadness etc. Starting a new routine may be hard at first but if you make exercise a priority some depression symptoms may wear off.

Could water be your answer?

Dealing with depression is hard for anyone going through it... it leaves one feeling sad, unhealthy, tired and even more feelings. One issue could be lack of water. Most people in today's world lack in the water department. How much water should you be drinking? It all depends on many factors, weight, area you live in, activity level etc. Urine believe it or not should have more of a clear color to it.

Lately, I have been researching online what are some natrual ways to combat depression and water seemed to make sense. If you do not drink enough water your body will try to make up for it, by allowing elsewhere in the body to lack. Is it possible that people with depression and other issues could be lacking water? The thought is one on my mind so consider adding it to your diet slowly and see if it makes you feel better.

Walking to help depression

I have started walking again as it helps me feel better. Walking helps get the heart pumping and can open your eyes to all the beauty around you. Nature helps me stay positive and the fresh air can also help with depression. So knowing that walking can help if you are able to, start a walking routine and see if that helps with some of the feelings of depression.

These shoes are fitness shoes that would work well if you are walking everyday.

I agree with all of your suggestions for dealing with depression. I think diet is also helpful, it is easy to eat too much sugar & carbs when depressed, but the brain needs fruits and vegetables to function properly. Also, seeking out positive & pleasurable experiences goes against the grain when depressed, but filling your life with these is very helpful. Spending time with positive people and getting distance from negativity is a biggie for me. Great suggestions here, Elizabeth!

I love those old school bikes! I have wanted one for some time. Now that I am feeling better, maybe I will save up for one. I like the ones where you push the pedals backwards to brake. That is the bike I learned on. I never did get the hang of the hand brakes.

Great suggestions on coping with depression.

Exercise also helps me. I try to walk every day. I also use a natural spectrum light at my computer and I think that helps.

Sometimes depression can be pretty tough to cope with. I take medicine for bipolar disorder and I think that helps. But sometimes I still get in a downward spiral.
