How are you coping with the recession effects?
Unemployment is up, the Down Jones is down, and foreclosures are at an all time high. These are all things that we are bombarded with every time we watch the news in the morning. It's hard to avoid the recession effects, especially if you are currently one of those that are unemployed. Keeping an upbeat attitude can be difficult during a recession, but changing the way we think and do things can have a profound effect on our thoughts and how we cope with these turbulent times.
I really try to practice what I preach, but I am a normal person just like you; the important thing is that I am cognizant of the way I think and I am trying to change it.
Start avoiding the morning news
The news makes money with sensationalism, the more shocking the story, the more people that will watch. The more viewers they have, the more advertising money they can collect from their customers who are the advertisers. What you need to remember is you are what you think, even if you are not there yet. If you think you are successful, then you will be successful. If you think you are a failure, you will keep going down the path of a failure. What I am not saying is to go out and spend like you have $100,000 in the bank. I was in a MLM once that said to "Fake it till you make it", the sad thing was there were many people that believed this and went further into debt buying cars and jewelry that they could not afford, just so they could look successful and fool their recruits. DO NOT DO THIS! This advice is absolutely horrible. The power of positive thinking is extremely powerful and watching bad news about the economy will not keep you positive.
Stop telling yourself you are lucky to have a job
I know this statement is going to be controversial because of the way we are trained to think from Kindergarten till retirement, but I truly think that finding a way to go into business for yourself is the way to true wealth. I hope you are not thinking that you can't do it, because anyone can. Look at your hobbies and think about what you can do to make money from it. Worst case, start a blog about your favorite hobby and see if it's something you enjoy. You won't be out a ton of money and just a little time. If it doesn't work out, maybe you could sell it to someone else.
My Brother-In-Law is a perfect example of this. He was let go from his job due to downsizing way before this recession started, he searched and searched for a new one and finally found it as a salesman for a beer distributing company. Shortly after that he realized that his calling was sitting right under his nose the whole time and he quit selling beer soon after he had a business plan together. You see, he has always been good at and enjoyed gourmet cooking and then the idea of opening a fresh seafood shop dawned on him and he ran with it. He opened in November of 2004 and he has been growing ever since.
I think my BIL is a perfect example of changing his way of thinking, he didn't mope around wishing for his old job back, he did something with the time he had and he found a solution for himself.
If you have been following the news recently (I didn't say I followed my advice all of the time) you may have taken notice of the story about British Airways asking their employees to take a furlough and yet still work; this story has broken my heart. These people keep saying "I'm lucky to have a job"; come on people, wake up and stop letting others push you around. Start thinking of your time like the valuable commodity that it is and treat it as such. If you don't value your time, no one ever will.
If you absolutely don't think you have the discipline to work for yourself, maybe you could at least start a blog and see where it goes. Who knows, your favorite hobby could one day make you some money if you put effort into it. If you don't think that would work either, then at least try to find a job that you may be happier at or at least one that will not ask you to work for free.

"Happiness Is a Positive Cash Flow"
I learned this from a business finance professor in college and it's more relevant now to myself than ever. I really wish I could remember the professor's name, but it was like 10 years ago.
Stay Productive and Help Yourself
Whether you are trying to find a new job or just find a way to make a couple of extra bucks, you need to stay productive. One of the laws of physics is a body in motion tends to stay in motion and a body at rest stays at rest. The longer you wait to do something, the more difficult it will be.I know this for a fact as I have experienced it in my online business. As long as I'm writing an article, lens or blog post a day the more inclined I am to keep writing something every day. I tend to get in my ruts when I stop publishing or doing something. My thoughts get stagnant so it is more difficult to think of subjects and then the negative thoughts start rolling in leading to me becoming anxious and coming close to giving up. After that, the stats and sales checking starts. The more days between sales, the more the stats get checked. This is unless I am doing something to stay productive.
Every day you wait to help yourself the harder things will get, so get up and do something to better yourself instead of sitting around and complaining about your former employer.

Concentrate on Yourself First
Start spending time doing things for yourself. Take an exercise class, go for a walk every morning, get a pedicure, or just spend some time on the deck reflecting before the sun comes up.
I am not guaranteeing pure happiness or wealth, but I hope these ideas can give you a good start.
