How to Deal with Stress in an Increasingly Stressful World

Ranked #17,868 in Healthy Living, #270,742 overall

Agh! Stressful Situations!

Your body responds to stress for a reason.  Your instincts help you recognize stressful situations so that you can avoid them. But in modern society, it's often hard to avoid stress, with increased workloads, stressful parenting situations, and limited time to complete our daily task list.

Simple things like driving have become a prime source for high stress levels. Some states in America, New York for example, are even requiring class instructions on road rage to help curb stress levels on the highway, since the number of deaths has risen each year.

Some people handle stress well, getting irritated for a few seconds and then letting it "roll of their backs." Others go a bit farther in their stress management, letting the annoyance hang on for hours, upset their mood, and cause them to cry.

Some, unfortunately, go to extremes, becoming violent and unpredictable because they haven't yet learned to deal with their stress.  You want to learn how to eliminate stress that you encounter on a daily basis so that it doesn't build up and cause you to explode in a fit of rage.

Stress is contributing to the loss of jobs, breakups of marriages, low self-esteem, and even death!  We're working long hours, worrying about money, and enduring a myriad of stressful situations we aren't taught how to tolerate with ease.

Luckily, there are ways you can learn the art of de-stressing, through methods such as hypnosis, meditation, deep breathing, and Neuro-linguistic programming.

Signs Your Body Isn't Handling Stress Well

Alarming news is coming to the forefront of the medical community as researchers gain new insight into how stress affects your body. They've spent decades connecting the dots between disease and stress symptoms.

Have you noticed you're suffering from more colds and flu or that you have more headaches or body aches than normal? We now know that increased stress levels damage your body's immune system, leaving you susceptible to disease.

When you have more stress, it alters the biochemical markers in your body to the point it can even make your body not respond to vaccines as it should. When you have high levels of stress, it suppresses your T-cells and lowers your antibody levels, which help you fight off foreign invasions to your body.

Aside from a lower immune system, stress can cause other problems in your body. What happens when you're faced with a stressful situation? Your neck probably stiffens, your shoulders ache, and you may be plagued by recurring headaches.

This is only the beginning, but your body is telling you it's time to de-stress. When your stress level starts to rise, your blood pressure rises, too. Your body churns out more stress hormones to deal with the situation, but the effects may be long-term.

Mental stress can contribute to heart disease because it impairs blood flow in some people. The symptoms are silent, so the person isn't even aware they're one step closer to being pushed over the threshold to a heart attack.

Researches have discovered that those who practice stress management techniques lessen the risk of heart problems and that those who adhere to an optimistic lifestyle actually live longer than those plagued by stress!

They've even found that patients recovering from surgery healed faster when they practiced stress management techniques than those who did nothing toward addressing their mental state post-surgery.

De-Stressing Without Medication

Not many people are fond of popping pills for every minor ache and pain. And even more are becoming averse to taking medication to alleviate stress. There are many different types of medicinal treatments for stress, including anti-depressants, herbal remedies, and pharmaceuticals that address anxiety-ridden individuals who don't do well in new routines.

But to combat stress on a regular basis, it's better to learn how to ease your mind and body into a more relaxed state whenever you need to - without reaching for a bottle of pills.

There are many ways to combat stress - you just have to choose a method that works best for you. For instance, many people like to use meditation when they're feeling abnormally anxious or irritable.

Meditation is one form of relaxation that doesn't require a prescription. It includes relaxing your mind and body through concentration, altered awareness, and being open to new thought patterns.

Another way you can de-stress is by using hypnosis techniques to retrain the way you think. Self-hypnosis can be done anywhere by anyone at any time. You address your subconscious mind and use autosuggestions to change your outlook about stressful situations.

Neuro-linguistic programming (or NLP) helps you apply strategic thinking to change your cognitive thought processes. It's rooted in empowering you through a spiritual path where your personal wisdom helps you achieve excellence - and in this case - tranquility.
