Chic Geek Entrepreneur: Science Rock Star Dean Kamen is One Cool Dude
Scientist inventor Dean Kamen stands out among the big thinkers, the movers and shakers of this century - the Steve Jobs and Bill Gates and Stephen Hawking types - whose ideas become reality, who bring technology and theoretical science down to the real world (read that last statement as: you and me and other ordinary folks) and make it exciting, practical and interesting .
Dean Kamen is the brilliant, personable guy who invented the Segway - that cool, silent two-wheeled electric personal transporter you may have seen on city streets, in airports or at theme parks. He's a baby-boomer inventor, physicist and upbeat entrepreneur who tirelessly campaigns for a better world through education and inspiration. Dean Kamen holds more than 100 U.S. patents Among those linventions are life-altering designs including the world's first portable insulin pump and a portable kidney dialysis machine.
Dean Kamen is a selfless and inspiring mentor to America's youth - keep your eye on the kids who've participated in USFIRST programs. They're the ones who will be bringing you "the next big thing" for the next several generations.

Meet Dean Kamen, Geek Rock Star
Role Model Mentor for Young Science Stars and Would-Be Geeks
When I lived in New Hampshire Dean Kamen was a local inventor with a business in the renovated Amoskeag (Manchester) Millyard complex. He was widely known as a man with great ideas and passion for getting things gone. He got lots of press for not only promoting science and inventing miraculous technology, but for giving back to the community and getting kids from kindergarten through high school excited about science, math and learning. Dean Kamen knows bright kids with the right encouragement can do wondrous things. He invented the insulin pump when he was still in high school. In simple terms, Dean Kamen is a brilliant scientist - a geek rock star - and inspiring mentor who shares his ideas, enthusiasm and inventions with the world.Kamen - a local business man and science guy - in 1984 was a driving force behind the creation of the SEE Science Center in Manchester. SEE is a cool place filled with hands-on science fun; it's the place just about every school kid in New Hampshire visits for a class trip and has a terrific time while learning about science, math and technology. Dean and his company DEKA have always in the local news in concert with SEE since its beginnings in the mid-1980s, sharing a passion for learning and problem solving by encouraging students to learn and love science, math and innovative technology.
Kamen founded USFIRST, org in 1989. This nonprofit sponsors many programs for students in grades K-12, including the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competitions for high school students. Many colleges and universities, professional associations, and corporations offer college scholarships to high school students on FIRST teams.. FIRST scholarships enable students to pursue majors and careers in engineering, computer science, science, math, design, aeronautics, and many other fields. In 2010, the FIRST Scholarship Program will include more than $11 million in college scholarships.
Dean Kamen has won numerous prestigious awards, has been profiled in books and articles and has appeared on television and radio programs all over the world. President Bill Clinton awarded Kamen the National Medal of Technology in 2000 for "inventions that have advanced medical care worldwide". He's been interviewed and honored by the best, and there's good reason. He's brilliant, he's personable, and he's passionate about science and education. Dean Kamen holds more than 400 patents, many for medical and robotic devices that improve the lives of thousands of people worldwide.

Science is Cool - Robotics Inspires Kids to New Achievements in Physics, Math, Thinking
Dean Kamen (above left, on a Segway personal transporter) is an inventor and entrepreneur who lives and works in southern New Hampshire. Kamen in probably most well known for his innovative gyroscopic two wheeled people-mover, the Segway introduced in late 1990s and now in wide use across cities, suburban campuses, theme parks and public areas.
The Segway is a revolutionary electric scooter-type personal transporter that along with its more recent cousins - the P.U.M.A. transporter prototype vehicle and the iBot stair climbing wheelchair (above, right) - is helping provide safe, green, personal mobility to citizens, security officers and tourists worldwide. While these inventions are innovative, not to mention popular with geeks and grandmas, they're only three of many helpful inventions to spring from ideas developed by Kamen and/or his team's (DEKA) research and development in robotics and medical devices. Dean Kamen also invented the first wearable insulin pump, the portable dialysis machine and a low-cost water filter for underdeveloped countries.
Kamen's patents actually number more than 400, and he's logged so many other accomplishments and credits worth cheering about it's difficult to pinpoint which ones to highlight in this profile lens. One of his most recent achievements is a revolutionary robotic arm, a prosthetic appliance that will help thousands of disabled people.

Excerpt from the Dean Kamen profile ...
Read just a brief excerpt about Dean Kamen, taken from a profile written for the 5th Heinz Awards :
"His crusade on behalf of science and technology began in 1984 when he created Science Enrichment Encounters, an interactive science learning center in Manchester, New Hampshire that is visited by 40,000 children each year. His idea was to help young people see science and technology as fun, exciting, accessible, and rewarding. This idea was the genesis for US FIRST, an organization that Mr. Kamen views as an opportunity to both teach children and to motivate them. He wants them to view engineers and scientists as role models and heroes."

Segway Really Gets Around
The Segway was introduced a decade ago - billed as "the next big thing." It's still a novelty in some areas, but in many urban areas and theme parks where walking can take the joy out of getting around, the Segway is a welcome friend. In Bethlehem, PA and many other historic communities you can take Segway tours. Sure saves on the shoe lever and feet.

Dean Kamen's Luke Skywalker Prosthetic
Until recently, an amputee missing an arm has had few prosthetic options beside the basic hook, but a $100 million government-funded project may change all that. One high-tech prosthetic arm, created by the inventor of the Segway, could allow amputees to have the kind of dexterity that was inconceivable with other prosthetics. Scott Pelley reports.

What do you think of Dean Kamen?
Tell Us Your Opinion
I've admired Dean Kamen for 20 years and his ideas have never ceased to delight and amaze me. When I worked in high tech, the "delight" factor was important for engineers thinking about "productizing" their ideas. I think he gets it ... and he has a real knack for inspiring youth that learning and giving back are cool. That's my idea of a role model and mentor. How 'bout you?

- Dean Says "You have teenagers thinking they're going to make millions as NBA stars when that's not realistic for even 1 percent of them. Becoming a scientist or engineer is."
I doubt that. I think it takes a high IQ and a real gift for understanding difficult concepts to become a scientist or engineer.
