After an enormously successful film and music career throughout the fifties and mid-sixties, Dean embarked upon a relatively new medium- television. The Dean Martin Show began on September 16, 1965, in which one of the segments, a celebrity roast, became wildly popular. Who better than "The Main Man" himself to publicly shower his legendary celebrity friends with ribbing insults and embarrassing stories.

Roasts
A roast, in North American English, is an event in which an individual is subjected to a public presentation of comedic insults, praise, outlandish true and untrue stories, and heartwarming tributes. The implication being that the roastee is able to take the jokes in good humor and not as serious criticism or insult, and therefore show their good nature. It is seen as a great honor to be roasted, as the individual is surrounded by friends, fans, and well-wishers, who can receive some of the same treatment as well during the course of the evening. The party and presentation itself are both referred to as a roast. The host of the event is called the roastmaster. Anyone who is honored in such a way is said to have been "roasted".
Dean Martin
Dean Martin (June 7, 1917 - December 25, 1995) was an Italian-American singer, film actor and comedian. He was one of the best known musical artists of the 1950s and 1960s. Martin's hit singles included "Memories Are Made of This", "That's Amore", "Everybody Loves Somebody", "Mambo Italiano", "Sway", "Volare" and "Ain't That A Kick In The Head?". One of the leaders of the "Rat Pack", he was a major star in four areas of show business: concert stage/night clubs, recordings, motion pictures, and television.

- Martin and Lewis From Wikipedia. This article is about the American comedy duo Martin & Lewis.
Martin and Lewis were an American comedy team, comprising singer Dean Martin (as the "straight man") and comedian Jerry Lewis. The pair first met in 1944; their debut as a duo occurred at Atlantic City's 500 Club on July 24/25, 1946.
Before the teamed up they were both stand up comics. They worked together in nightclubs, on radio (starting in 1949) and in television and films. In the team's later years, it was no longer billed by the two men's surnames alone, as in their early radio work, but by their full names: "Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis." These separate identities helped them launch successful solo careers after the team's dissolution.
