Shambala Preserve, Roar Foundation
Why, you might ask, would I want to write a letter to Tippi Hedren, that actress who was in Alfred Hitchcock's, The Birds?
Why? Well, I'll tell you why?
Tippi Hedren is the founder of the Roar Foundation and the Shambala Preserve. She has been caring for big cats, that had been discarded or mistreated in captivity, since 1983. Shambala is located in Acton, California and currently houses 70 big cats. The preserve operates solely on donations.
She has worked for legislation that will stop the breeding, sale and mistreatment of captive wild cats. She has also worked tirelessly to stop canned hunting, a horrible practice (that is still legal in many states in the U.S.) where captive big cats are often drugged and "hunters" buy the privilege of blowing them away with their weapon of choice.
Wouldn't you like to tell her how you feel about her efforts to preserve these beautiful creatures? Well here's your chance to write an open letter to Tippi Hedren.

- Dear Tippi,
Please stop being a hypocrite and find a real sanctuary for your animals. You started out as an exotic pet owner and 48 people were hurt during that horrible movie you made with animals you bought from breeders. May today's tragedy in Ohio be a sign you need to change you ways.

Roar Foundation
In 1981, Hedren produced Roar, an 11-year project starring dozens of African lions. The film led to the establishment of the non-profit Roar Foundation, in 1983, and to the creation of her Shambala Preserve, which is located in Acton, California, at the edge of the Mojave Desert, 40 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
The Roar Foundation raises all the funds to keep the Shambala Preserve open. According to Hedren, it costs more than $1 million annually to maintain the facilities. The current construction of a new compound for Michael Jackson's tigers, Thriller and Sabu, will cost close to $70,000.

Thriller and Sabu
Hedren has been diligently working to get legislation passed that will stop the breeding, sale and mistreatment of wild cats. She states that, "Not only is it dangerous for the animals, but it is extremely dangerous for the people who buy the wild animals."
She appeared in front of Congress to promote the Captive Wildlife Safety Act, which was introduced by Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon. It passed and was signed into law by President George W. Bush. This legislation bans the interstate trade and transportation of wild big cats and went into effect on September 17, 2007.
Hedren has co-authored legislation entitled, "The Federal Ban on Breeding the Exotic Feline for Personal Possession Act." The Bill will be introduced in May 2009 by Congressman Ed Perlmutter (D-CO). Hedren coauthored this bill because of a desperate need for protection of humans and animals alike. "(Legislation) is the only way the breeding will stop," she said. "But, it's the enforcement of it that makes it work."

Shambala Preserve

Lion by Chipsnthedip
Shambala Preserve, an 80-acre wildlife habitat which she founded in 1983. It currently houses over 70 animals, including African lions, Siberian and Bengal tigers, leopards, servals, mountain lions and bobcats. Hedren lives on site and conducts monthly tours of the preserve for the public.
Recently, Shambala became the new home for Michael Jackson's two Bengal tigers, Sabu and Thriller, when he decided to close the zoo at his Neverland Valley Ranch in California.
Most of the cats are there as a result of illegal breeding and sale within the United States. According to Hedren, the exotic animal industry is just after the illegal drug industry in size.

Elephants at Shambala

"Elephant" Wildlife Animal Watercolor by PaulJacksonart
According to Tippi Hedren:
One came from a game preserve outside of Vancouver and the other one came from the circus. They are so happy. When they first met, well, elephants don't like each other when they first meet, like people. And I could imagine them thinking, "you say we're going to live together?"
I did a little research because they were so comfortable with each other. They touched trunks, he ran his trunk over the top of her head, behind her ears, over her back. We were wondering how they could be so friendly. It wasn't normal.
I almost cried when I got the information on them. It became clear to me that they left Africa on the same boat! They went to Frankfurt, Germany where one went to the circus and the other to the animal park. It was amazing. Destiny.
Timo, the Bull Elephant, who spent many happy years at Shambala, died in 2005 of natural causes at the age of 48.
