Why I like death angels

Angel of Death by Victoria Frances

When you first look at this work, your eye is brought to the highlights in the girls hair. Your eye then quickly trails her hair to her somber face, which is the focal point of this piece. From here, your eyes are directed down to her body and to the cat in her hands. Your eye then flows back up her arm to her sad face.
As your eye passing over her body, you notice the all the details portraying her as a young angel. Her smooth skin and girlish figure, and the bare shoulders lead you to the tiny wings. Even the object of her lament, the cat, only serves to portray the youth and innocence of the angel, as if perhaps she is experiencing the loss of death for the first time.
Other elements, such as the cold somber tones and hues, as well as the lack of background perspective help keep the viewers' focus on the sad moment in the immediate foreground. Her clothes and hair are as disheveled as the cats fur, furthering the feeling of distress. The appearance of the cat even makes me wonder at whether the cat was her pet (Do angels have cats?) The scraggly fur makes it seem to me to be a stray cat that has died, an event that, hardly being significant enough to affect us, still has this angel weeping, and possibly even relating to the stray. Or perhaps she is weeping out of remorse, as the Angel of Death, being the one responsible for bringing death to this sad creature.
