As with all evil Lords, Voldemort has followers known as Death Eaters. These are wizards who are (mostly) of pure magical families and who are highly skilled in the Dark Arts. They tend to keep their allegiance secret but each has a tattoo, the Dark Mark, on their arm. It shows a skull with a snake coming out of it. When Voldemort wishes to summon them, he touches one Death Eater's mark, and the rest of them feel the design burning and moving. They are then to apparate to wherever the Dark Lord is located. When they meet, they wear dark robes and skull masks that cover their faces.
When Voldemort was first defeated back when Harry Potter was a baby, many of the Death Eaters were sent to Azkaban prison, but some confessed their crimes and received lesser punishments for turning in other Death Eaters. No one can be quite sure exactly where the loyalties of these reformed and former Death Eaters lies...
They are both elitist and racist, disliking "mudbloods," those wizards who are from mixed magical and non-magical families, as well as Muggles (regular humans). This is somewhat ironic as Voldemort himself is from a mixed family and in some rare instances, wizards who truly despised their non-magical heritage have been admitted to the Death Eaters. One example of this is Severus Snape, who recanted after Voldemort's fall and got a job teaching at Hogwart's.
Death Eater Brotherhood
Some of the bad guys Harry Potter has to confront
- Lucius Malfoy - he escaped prosecution by claiming he acted under the Imperius Curse during Voldemort's reign, but there are those who believe that Malfoy has been loyal to Voldemort all along. It is presumed his son, Draco, is following in his father's footsteps.
- Severus Snape - the only half-blood known to have been a Death Eater (unless you count Voldemort himmself), Snape is now a teacher at Hogwart's after informing on other Death Eaters after Voldemort's defeat.
- Barty Crouch Jr - he was the one who sent up the Dark Mark at the Quidditch World Cup, using Harry Potter's stolen wand, and later impersonated Auror Mad-Eye Moody.
- Peter Pettigrew, aka Wormtail - he stayed in the guise of a rat for 13 years until called back to service of the Dark Lord.
- Igor Karkaroff - head of the Durmstrang school. Like Snape, he was a Death Eater but informed on his compatriots when Voldemort fell. He flees suddenly when Voldemort summons the Death Eaters in "Goblet of Fire."
- Quirinus Quirrell - was host to Lord Voldemort's energy. It's unknown if he was a willing supporter of Voldemort or was just a weak individual who was taken over.
- Bellatrix Lestrange - cousin to Harry's godfather Sirius Black, she used the Cruciatus Curse on Neville Longbottom's parents until they both lost their minds.
- Regulus Black - younger brother to Sirius, he was killed in the first war, sacrificing his own life to destroy one of Voldemort's Horcruxes.
- Crabbe and Goyle - although you may at first think of young Draco Malfoy's two ever-present henchmen, in fact both boy's fathers are Death Eaters and appear when Voldemort first retakes human form.
- Antonin Dolohov - fought for Voldemort in the First War, imprisoned in Azkaban, then liberated to fight for the Death Eaters again in the Second War. Responsible for the deaths of Lupin and Tonks at the Battle of Hogwarts.

- HPL: The Death Eaters
- The Death Eaters are those wizards who follow Voldemort. There seems to be a fairly small number of them, although those who Apparate to Voldemort's side when the Dark Mark on their arms summons them may be the inner circle of his strongest supporters only. Some of the Death Eaters have children at Hogwarts.

Love this lens, exceptionally informative.
And I find it fascinating that like Hitler, Valdemort is someone who hates his own heritage to the point where he is determined to utterly destroy anyone who reminds him of what he truly is.
