Deborah Meaden Biography

Who is Deborah Meaden?

Deborah Meaden was born on 11 February 1959 in Somerset, England.

After leaving boarding school, Deborah went to college to study business. She then worked for a few months as a sales-room model in a fashion house. At the age of nineteen she moved to Italy and set up a glass and ceramics export agency. Her flair for business enabled her to persuade prestigious retailers such as Harvey Nichols to stock her goods.

Deborah's next business venture was to take out a franchise with the Italian fashion company, Stefanel, followed by several other enterprises including running a bingo concession at Butlins.

Eventually she joined her mother and stepfather's holiday park business, Weststar. Starting out on the shop floor, Deborah worked her way up through the ranks to became Managing Director of Weststar Holidays. In 1999, she became the major shareholder in the company as a result of a management buyout.

Deborah sold the company in a deal worth £33m, but kept a 23% stake and maintained an active role within the company whilst exploring new investment opportunities.

In 2006 she joined the TV programme Dragons' Den in it's third series, following the departure of Rachel Elnaugh. As a result of the programme she has invested in several featured businesses, often in collaboration with other dragons.

In 2007, Deborah sold her stake in Weststar Holidays to Parkdean Holidays for £83m.

Deborah Meaden supports several charities and lives in Somerset in a house once owned by William Pitt the Elder.

She met her husband Paul when he worked at Weststar during a break from his university studies and they own a smallholding with a variety of animals including dogs, sheep, pigs, horses, chickens and a cat!

Deborah says she's "never cooked a meal in her life" - Paul does all the cooking and if he wasn't around to cook for her she'd "eat gherkins out of a jar"!

Anyone Can Do It: My Story (Paperback)

Anyone Can Do It: My Story (Paperback)

"At 30, Duncan Bannatyne had no money and was enjoying life on the beaches of Jersey. He saw a story of someone who had made himself a millionaire, and decided to do the same. Five years later he had done it, and now he is worth 168 million. In this remarkable book, Bannatyne relives his colourful path to riches, from ice cream salesman to multi-millionaire, explaining how anyone could take the same route as he did - if they really want to. Hugely articulate, and with numerous fascinating and revealing stories to tell, this is an autobiography and a business book unlike any other - but then Bannatyne isn't like any other businessman, either."

Enter the Dragon (Hardcover)

Enter the Dragon (Hardcover)

Theo Paphitis is the outspoken and charismatic star of Dragons' Den who has turned round a string of household names, from Ryman to La Senza, in a high-profile business career that has brought him millions. Now, in his revealing and controverisal memoir, he not only takes the reader behind the scenes on Dragons' Den, he explains how he made his fortune. He also provides a masterclass in business methods that will enable anyone who reads this book to learn so much about how they too can improve their business. In the book, Theo recalls how his family moved to England from Cyprus and how as a poor immigrant, he took whatever jobs he could, starting as a tea boy for Lloyd's. There, despite the handicap of his dyslexia, he began to take the first steps on a career that would net him a fortune. He reveals the methods that took him to the top, and also provides some fascinating insight into the national game from his spell as chairman of Millwall FC. But, above all, this is a book that will provide all readers with the opportunity to learn from one of the nation's most successful businessmen and put his ideas into practice."

The Real Deal: My Story from Brick Lane to "Dragons' Den" (Paperback)

"After dropping out of school at just sixteen, James Caan started his business life in a broom cupboard with no qualifications and two pieces of fatherly wisdom: 'observe the masses and do the opposite' and 'always look for opportunities where both parties benefit'. Armed with this advice, natural charm and the Yellow Pages, he built a market-leading business with a turnover of GBP130 million and swiftly became one of Britain's most successful entrepreneurs. From Caan's childhood as a Pakistani immigrant to the phenomenal success of his first company and beyond, "The Real Deal" traces both his financial and personal achievements. It offers a frank account of what success at thirty really signifies and brings us right up to the present, including his impact on Dragons' Den and what his charity work, from saving a hospital in London to building a school in Lahore, means to him. Ultimately, it is a story of learning what money is really worth, told by one the country's most insightful businessmen."

I agree with everything you say about Deborah Meaden. She's a good businesswoman and when I see the follow-ups to show how companies that got an investment from the Dragons, I've thought she came over as a nice person who wanted to do everything to help a business to succeed.

Nice lens. I love that Harry and Paul sketch - brilliant! On a serious note though, Deborah is a smart cookie and I enjoyed the clip with her top tips where she talks about business plans. It's so easy to just jump into things hoping to make money, without doing the market research first! I'll be featuring this on 'Reggae Reggae Sauce'.
