Low self-esteem is becoming a pandemic around the world.
Girls as young as eight are criticizing their bodies and determining at an early age what will need fixing to get them to perfection.
Debra Beck, author of My Feet Aren't Ugly, isn't just turning a blind to this issue - she's helping teen girls feel better about themselves and teaching parents and grandparents how to help build self-esteem in their offspring.
In My Feet Aren't Ugly, Beck gives insight into what it takes for a young girl to develop a healthy level of confidence - in her appearance, her relationships, and the decisions that she makes.
She takes into account the ritual teenage years that are ripe with anxiety, self doubt, and peer pressure. It's a celebration of every young girl's uniqueness and a guide to getting over those times when they're worried about who's more popular, who looks better, or whether they're "good enough" to do anything.
As a parent, this book is the perfect accompaniment to your personal guidance and influence over your daughter or granddaughter. Debra Beck isn't just a person shouting from the sidelines - she's a mentor for teenage girls and founder of Spirited Youth, an organization just for girls whose mission is to help them become empowered with a high dose of self-esteem.
As a mom of two daughters herself, Debra's reflection on the issue of low self esteem with the female teenage demographic is open and honest and genuine in how it helps you face the challenge of getting your daughter to embrace the positive influence you provide.

As you saw above, Dove has launched a self esteem campaign. The video showcases various snippets of news broadcasts around the world explaining how little children are learning how to hate their body (or other aspects about themselves) from a frighteningly young age.
Very young girls start out making simple comments such as, "I hate my freckles." Why do they do it? Someone may have mentioned it at school and caused your daughter to feel "different" from the other girls.
Popular or not, most young girls go through a very similar process of doubting themselves and wishing they were better than who they are now. Low self esteem is a universal plague that eats away at our youth
Do you sometimes feel like other girls are prettier, more trendy, or more popular than you? Do you ever feel bad about yourself?
How can you help? What can you do?
I'm talking about the kind of woman who accepts her imperfections and realizes that appearances or opinions of others don't determine who or what we are in life.
"Stumbled" this. Every effort to get the word out is well worth it. Thanks!

I cannot express my gratitude enough for this lens and your message. We live in an outrageous culture.I watched a beautiful woman in my world alter her face and body almost beyond recognition of her former self. Now she looks like a person who has had lots of plastic surgery. Who is she? I admired her before; now I don't know who she is. Posted April 29, 2008 |

This is wonderful! I wish I had something like this when I was growing up. My best friend is a nail tech who loves doing pedicures. She has created "Foot Goddess" pedicures because so many women come in and say "I hate my feet they are ugly". She says I tell that their feet represent "understanding of the self". After that is said, I watch them sit back, reflect, and talk about their distorted image. She says there is always tears but when they leave the comment she hears the most is "my feet are sweet and cute".
What you are doing is helping the next generation love themselves. Bravo to you!!! Linda

Good work on the lens! Our society's focus on this ideal, unrealistic model of beauty is so destructive, thanks to you, Debra Beck, and Dove for recognizing and trying to address it. Posted January 31, 2008 |
