My Feet Aren't Ugly - A Book on Self Esteem for Girls
Ranked #5,831 in Parenting & Kids, #198,600 overall
Debra Beck Teaches How to Raise an Empowered Daughter
Low self-esteem is becoming a pandemic around the world.
Girls as young as eight are criticizing their bodies and determining at an early age what will need fixing to get them to perfection.
Debra Beck, author of My Feet Aren't Ugly, isn't just turning a blind to this issue - she's helping teen girls feel better about themselves and teaching parents and grandparents how to help build self-esteem in their offspring.
In My Feet Aren't Ugly, Beck gives insight into what it takes for a young girl to develop a healthy level of confidence - in her appearance, her relationships, and the decisions that she makes.
She takes into account the ritual teenage years that are ripe with anxiety, self doubt, and peer pressure. It's a celebration of every young girl's uniqueness and a guide to getting over those times when they're worried about who's more popular, who looks better, or whether they're "good enough" to do anything.
As a parent, this book is the perfect accompaniment to your personal guidance and influence over your daughter or granddaughter. Debra Beck isn't just a person shouting from the sidelines - she's a mentor for teenage girls and founder of Spirited Youth, an organization just for girls whose mission is to help them become empowered with a high dose of self-esteem.
As a mom of two daughters herself, Debra's reflection on the issue of low self esteem with the female teenage demographic is open and honest and genuine in how it helps you face the challenge of getting your daughter to embrace the positive influence you provide.
Self Esteem and the Teenage Girl
As you saw above, Dove has launched a self esteem campaign. The video showcases various snippets of news broadcasts around the world explaining how little children are learning how to hate their body (or other aspects about themselves) from a frighteningly young age. What self esteem issues are young girls facing today?
Debra Beck knows there are many - and she's trying to help parents educate their children and prevent this mindset from taking root in the early years.
Very young girls start out making simple comments such as, "I hate my freckles." Why do they do it? Someone may have mentioned it at school and caused your daughter to feel "different" from the other girls. As she grows older, your daughter may struggle with more serious self esteem issues - such as peer pressure to take part in harmful activities, not having the same body as the other girls, or not possessing the outgoing personality that makes young men line up at the door to ask for a date.
Popular or not, most young girls go through a very similar process of doubting themselves and wishing they were better than who they are now. Low self esteem is a universal plague that eats away at our youthIt can be a painful experience and feel like it's the end of the world, and young girls need help - the kind of help found in My Feet Aren't Ugly - to understand that what they're going through is normal and that they are valued members of our society.
About the Book
Do you sometimes feel like other girls are prettier, more trendy, or more popular than you? Do you ever feel bad about yourself? In this funny, honest book, teen expert and mentor Debra Beck provides in-depth examples and exercises to develop the tools you need for self-confidence. What Do You Find Most Shocking About Teen Girls and Low Self Esteem?

Moms and Grandmothers - Set a Good Self Esteem Example!
How can you help? What can you do?First, before you give your daughter or granddaughter a copy of Debra Beck's My Feet Aren't Ugly, read it yourself.
Discover what today's young girls are enduring so that you can openly talk to your little girl about her trials and tribulations. Then, start setting a good example - be conscious of your own self esteem demons.
You may not realize it, but whenever you make an off-the-cuff remark about being "too fat" or "too old looking," your daughter absorbs that comment and applies your way of thinking to herself.
You can tell her until the cows come home that she's beautiful and perfect, but your own mom thinks that about you, too - yet you are critical about yourself, right? The same thing happens with tweens and teens suffering from low self esteem.
You want to become a role model for your daughter or granddaughter to show her what a strong, confident woman looks like. By "looks," I don't mean physical appearance - unless you're talking about the happy smile you plaster on your face because you feel good about who you are.
I'm talking about the kind of woman who accepts her imperfections and realizes that appearances or opinions of others don't determine who or what we are in life.A confident women will instill in her daughter that she is the one who sets her own path and carves her place out in history on her terms, not that of her peers.
Read the book.
And then talk to her after she's read it, too!
Spirited Youth
One and Three Day Workshops
Spirited Youth is a organization for and about girls, founded by Debra Beck in 2005. Its mission is to help young girls have a better sense of who they and make better decisions in all areas of life by learning how to love themselves and becoming empowered with self-esteem.Spirited Youth offers workshops that are based on topics outlined in My Feet Aren't Ugly. What a special 'summer camp' this could be!
Debra has been working closely with girls for the last 15 years, beginning when her two daughters entered their teen years. Her home was the place where all the kids "hung out" and felt safe.
Is Someone You Love Suffering from a Low Self Esteem?

- I cannot express my gratitude enough for this lens and your message. We live in an outrageous culture.I watched a beautiful woman in my world alter her face and body almost beyond recognition of her former self. Now she looks like a person who has had lots of plastic surgery. Who is she? I admired her before; now I don't know who she is.

- This is wonderful! I wish I had something like this when I was growing up. My best friend is a nail tech who loves doing pedicures. She has created "Foot Goddess" pedicures because so many women come in and say "I hate my feet they are ugly". She says I tell that their feet represent "understanding of the self". After that is said, I watch them sit back, reflect, and talk about their distorted image. She says there is always tears but when they leave the comment she hears the most is "my feet are sweet and cute".
What you are doing is helping the next generation love themselves. Bravo to you!!! Linda

- Good work on the lens! Our society's focus on this ideal, unrealistic model of beauty is so destructive, thanks to you, Debra Beck, and Dove for recognizing and trying to address it.
