Journey to Debt Freedom

I'm working online and offline to earn as much extra money as possible to pay off a staggering amount of debt. We live on a strict budget and every extra dollar goes toward paying off the debt. I plan to pursue every avenue available to earn extra money actively and passively to reach my goal of debt freedom.

April 2008 - Unfortunately, in the last few months our financial situation became unmanageable. The amount of money the debt collectors wanted me to pay was so much more than I could pay, it was ridiculous. One collector filed for a writ of seizure and forced me into bankruptcy.

June 2009 - I signed my chapter 7 bankruptcy papers the last day of this month. I discharged approximately $280,000 worth of debt, but I still have about $65,000 left. One is a HELOC on my house and the other is a ton of student loans I cosigned for a friend who isn't paying. I need to contact said friend and try to get her to pay. I am also going to contact the company and find out if they will work something out with me. I'll also need a complete accounting of anything that has been paid. But, at least I can start over now.

July 2009 will be the worst financial month I've had because I won't have enough income to pay the bills. I am trying to make up for the tutoring loss with website building. July is the slowest tutoring month of the year. Everyone goes on vacation and gets ready for school to start back up in mid-August. I hope to make up everything we need to at least pay our basic expenses. I think I will. I hope I will.

My Bankruptcy Story

I retained an attorney who specializes in bankruptcy for Chapter 7 protection the last week of May 2008.

She charges $799 for the entire process, and I've paid her $250 to date. When she has the entire amount, she'll file my case in court.

Please visit my "Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in Louisiana" lens for all the details. The link is in my featured lenses module just below this one.

When helping people with finding Boulder Real Estate I often have to counsel them on not overextending. Your lens is a great reminder that folks need to be careful with their finances!

It is a wonderful feeling when you are debt free. I started on my financial freedom journey in my twenties and it pays off - my children will benefit from this too. Good to hear you're on your way.
