Your December holidays

From the lens December in Holland.

Do you have Dutch roots? If so, are there any Dutch elements in your December family traditions? Do you celebrate Sinterklaas? Eat Dutch treats? Do you use the diner-set that your great-grandmother brought with her from Holland on Christmas?

Please share your holiday traditions with us!

Hi, I have Dutch ancesters but have not yet managed to find where they originated prior to coming to England. I have visited Holland during my time in the services and taken part in the Nijmegan marches on several occasions. I have also visited on holiday aswell and always get a sense of belonging. I have been told when aslleep i talk in a dutch/german accent. Christmas has usually been traditional English in the family, but i would love to try some Dutch recipes.

No Dutch connection I'm afraid, but I love the idea that there have been midwinter festivals going way back in history. These traditions are part of what it means to be human. We're just starting to build our own family traditions with our two young boys, one of them will be to allow the boys to choose a charity to make a donation to - I think this will be on Boxing Day (Dec 26th).

It is now almost60 years since my family left Holland for Australia and while several of the traditions have gone by the way with us as children growing up in a different environment, the one thing that has remained is the olliebollen at New year (and as many times during the year as we can get hold of them). We may now well be Australian, but our Dutch roots are secure whenever the olliebollen turn up. There is nothing in the world that can match them. Of course our Christmas/New Year is in the much, much warmer weather. Only once, very freakishly did we have a very light snow fall on Christmas day

We used to have quite a dutch feast at my parents on Christmas eve with vla and many dutch dishes. Now that we celebrate at our house on Thankmas (Thanksgiving+Christmas) before we leave for FL, we have dutch deserts and food presents from my son who lives in Kalamazoo, MI and has access to a dutch bakery. We even had oliebollen this year..a rare treat. I take the peperkoek to FL with me.
