Teach your children to play cards for hours of fun ( and learning too)

Teach your kids to play cards for hours of free fun. Here you'll find an introduction to easy card games for the whole family.
I've learnt to play card games as a child, and I still play cards today, many years later.
As a child in England in the 1950s, my choice of toys was very limited. Post war the country had many problems, and producing new and exciting toys for children was not a priority.

For girls toys there were dolls. For boys toys there were toy soldiers, train sets and Meccano. There were a few more toys for boys than there were toys for girls, but not much choice.

I have never liked dolls. My parents gave me a doll and a toy pram, the same toys for girls as every other girl, but I never played with them. I preferred reading, drawing, and playing with cards.

We often played family card games. We started with the simple games like snap and go fish, then moved on to whist and rummy, followed later by canasta.and finally bridge. I also enjoyed different games of Solitaire ( called Patience in the UK)
Solitaire is on every computer these days, but back then you played it with a deck of cards, and I think that's still the best way to play Solitaire today.

There are so many toys available to children today, that the simple fun of playing cards can easily be forgotten.A deck of cards is compact, portable, inexpensive, educational and fun.

As well as the traditional 52 pack of playing cards, there is a huge variety of picture cards games for children, designed for fun and learning new skills.
All through life you can learn new games to play with family and friends. Always keep a deck of cards with you!
Wherever you are in the world, there is someone who will play cards with you.
Every time I go on vacation I pack a deck of cards.
Remind yourself of the fun you can have with cards!

SNAP! If you learn just 1 game, it must be Snap!

Simple, noisy, great fun! The first card game to teach your children.

If your children have never played cards before,Snap! is a great game to start with.
You can buy special Snap! cards which are more colorful than the traditional playing cards, but this is not necessary.

Here , just in case Snap! has been missing from your life, in great detail, is how to play the game! The basic deck of cards can give you hours of fun.

WARNING! It can get noisy!

PARENTS join in! Its fun. Only one person can win- a useful lesson in life!

Go Fish! The other simple game everyone should play

Do you remember how you used to love Go Fish?

What a great game!

Each player tries to get sets of 4 matching cards by asking other players if they have one. If I have a queen, I can say "Annie, do you have a queen please?" If she has one, she must hand it over. I can then ask her for another queen,or a different card ( I must already have one at least) or ask someone else. If the answer is "NO" she adds "Go Fish!" and I have to take an extra card from the pool in the centre.
Do you remember now?

The winner is the one who uses up all her cards . stacking them in sets of 4. Its a great test of memory, and also helps social skills, but most of all its FUN!

Card games for one-you need never be bored with a deck of cards in your pocket

The original Solitaire- played with a deck of cards.

Solitaire, known also as "Patience" in the UK, is any form of card game for 1 person. We are all familiar with the addictive Solitaire on our computers. No computer with you? deck of cards in pocket? then just deal out a deck of cards, just like in the picture.
There are some very hard, complex games of Solitaire, that require thought, and give the player options. Look at this website all about Solitaire or Patience for all you'll ever need to know about Solitaire /Patience card games.

The most simple Solitaire, apart from the famous computer game, is Clock Solitaire.
There is no chance- its all down to how the cards are dealt, but its great for children to learn numbers and the clock. For adults, its a very gentle way to pass the time, and great when it actually does all work out.

To play; deal out all 52 cards face down, going round the hours of the clock with the first 12, then put the 13th in the centre. Do this 4 times, but put the last card face up in the centre.
Say,its a "3"- then slide it face up under the pile at 3 o'clock, and take one off the top of this pile. Its a queen! Slide it under 12 o'clock, and take a new card from the top.
If you turn up a king, its bad news. You then have to put it in the middle , and take a card from this pile. When you turn up the fourth king, and there are now cards left in the middle to take, the game is finished. In a prefect game, the fourth king is the last card, and the clock is complete.

Be Patient- this game is also called patience, and patience in the end will reward you!

Playing cards in Adult Life- the game of Bridge.

If you get the chance to learn Bridge- take it. Its a great social game for adult life

When I met my husband, over 30 years ago, one of the things he taught me early on in our marriage was how to play Bridge. I already loved playing cards, but thought Bridge was too complex.
Bridge can actually be played on all sorts of levels, from the very amateur to the professionals who earn a living playing Bridge for money.
We play most weeks with friends. Its a team game, two against two, so you need friends who are on the same wavelength with the same Bridge philosophy. Ours is- a glass of wine, a gossip, and a few rubbers of Bridge- a perfect evening!.

Bridge has something of an image problem- it's thought of as being a stuffy old game for stuffy old people- and it was!

My grandmother taught me to play cards, and it's one of my most treasured memories - playing cards with my gran. I've since played sporadically over the years - including learning UNO while working as a singer on a cruise ship - that is sUch a fun game! My son enjoys (and is very good at) doing magic tricks with playing cards. Great lens! Heartily blessed! :)
