Deconstructing Destruction
This lens will explore the idea of destroying the destroyers. Real estate "developers" are the villains of this piece. Provide jobs? How about breaking rocks in a prison. That would be more useful. Housing starts as an economic indicator? Asinine. Better to have housing ends as an economic indicator. By that I mean finishing existing houses:
- remodeling
- redecorating
- renovating
- restoration
- rehabilitation
- green building retrofitting
Although it would be nice to throw all the clear cutters and big real estate "developers" in prison. (Maybe some day) In the meantime, quite a few are getting the word from architects that green buildings are what clients want. At least architects have wised up to the new green reality. The big real estate "developers" are more like zombies and walking dead still pursuing the old death economy of oil, coal and fission.
On that cheerful note, let's start exploring!

Real Estate "Developers"
Is it really development? Or destruction?

The law is structured (warped by a small oligarchy) to support an industry of real estate scams that would collapse (and periodically does) if taxes and road building and zoning and rubber stamp state assemblies and enabling local officials and corruption did not prop it up. These private interests even use eminent domain to steal private property when it suits their purpose. And their purpose is to chew up the landscape under the illusion of "development". Raw land is termed "unimproved" as if trees (and flowers and wildlife and rivers) were a blight to be erased. It takes centuries for most trees to grow several storeys but only a few minutes for a chainsaw or bulldozer to reduce them to splinters. Trees make the oxygen we breathe and if asthma and shortness of breath and other respiratory problems are on the rise (and they are); then now you know why.
Take away the tax breaks, the easy approvals, the subdivision zoning, the political enablers and the scandals and we might see liveable cities instead of neighborhoods sliced up by noisy freeways and bypasses and exurbs too far away to walk to work, school or shopping. But then high gasoline prices may force us to head back to the cities and fix up homes instead of building more and more homes in a country where new houses sit empty in abandoned suburbs and foreclosed & evicted people are homeless.
There are enough houses in this country. More than enough. We just need to fix up existing houses instead of destroying the Earth to satisfy ravenous developers who manipulate us into overpopulation by glorifying families with too many children that couples cannot feed, educate nor keep healthy and for which government cannot provide jobs when they grow up because corporations are eliminating jobs by sending them overseas and automating the remaining jobs out of existence.

mskaseyj2002 (47 months ago | reply)
Narrow Streets, No large Garages in front, good density, various housing designs, sidewalks. THis is actually very good urban design
doratagold (47 months ago | reply)
I think this all due to economics, NOT good design. The nearest place to shop is not within walking distance for example.

suburban sprawl
- What can be done to prevent suburban sprawl?
- The Urban Land Institute and the National Association of Home Builders have produced a film warning about the dangers of suburban sprawl. The film wonders aloud about "what can be done to reverse the tide and preserve the land?"
Watch the video to see what solutions were proposed - in 1959, when the film was produced. Unbelievable that people then and now could think that anyone with a profit motive (home builders) would have any incentive to limit sprawl when they could make tons or money off raping the Earth. - Suburban Sprawl to Smart Growth

Deconstructing Destruction
Real estate "developers" have written the law to give destruction tax breaks, they get the best and easiest bank loans (often they own the banks anyway or the banks own real estate), they get insurance breaks; they have state assemblymen and legislators in their pocket, and judges rule in their favor.
Environmentalists have long known this. But Occupy Wall Street-people and 99% and Tea Party members take note.
The Capitol

Dictatorial democracy
is where you are not really free to speak

(note cops ready to hit demonstrator over head despite US Constitutional rights)
but the politicians are not listening anyway and never will.
Should we give up? Or get ourselves beaten to death trying to be seen by the cameras? The reporters were practically dialing up the police and asking them to hit protestors. Notice how many pundits in the news media are saying "there might be violence" so that the police feel obligated to come and beat people up? Even the "free press" is against us. And after all, the US is us.

sprawl kills
- Suburban Sprawl is killing ..
- Every time they create a new subdivision from a forest countless wild animals lose their livelyhoods and then, most likely, their lives when they have to wander somewhere new, not knowing where to get food and having to cross many highways w/ their families.
The vast majority of people here on Care2 live on suburban plots and therefore cannot conceive the problem, because they see themselves as so altruistic.. and that self-richeousness feeling is the seed of all hate, and they dont know it. - Suburban Sprawl is at the Heart of the Killing
- Our world operates as a death cult, where the greatest killers are the bulldozer, the automobile and fatty foods combined with a lack of exercise. We need to go back to the old ways, but by definition Conservatism means doing what the globalist, hatist leaders want for themselves and their friends.
