Decopatch? No it is not one more method to stop smoking! It is a fun and creative activity for young and old, quickly becoming the in thing to do.

People who are into arts and crafts have undoubtedly stumbled across the term Decopatch. But for the unaware, what is Decopatch is a fairly common question and more often than not, they confuse it for the term decoupage, which is an old French technique that utilizes table napkins by cutting out the designs and pasting them onto furniture surfaces.

Knowing what is Decopatch is incomplete without knowing what its predecessor, decoupage, is. Decoupage is a technique of decorating bland furniture surfaces by gluing designs that were cut out from table napkins and topped with varnish. It is a relatively easy way of beautifying pieces of furniture but can take a lot of time since several layers of varnish and a lot of sanding applications are required in order for the napkin to totally merge to the surface of the furniture. While decoupage is easy for experts, it can be very frustrating of young designers and artists and those who are on their first try on this craft.

On the other hand, Decopatch, which is widely considered as the offshoot of decoupage is a scissorless and easier alternative. It can be used in children's projects for kids as young as four years old but can also be used by more mature artists in more advanced and more sophisticated applications. A lot of interior decorators and professional designers are also quite fond of Decopatch.

How did it all start?

Decopatch was founded in 1995 near Lyon (France). The founder, Mr Villard, got the idea of creating such papers while restoring an old piece of furniture. He then created the designs of the paper and made the range improve continually. There are more than 150 different designs in the range, which is updated annually.

Decopatch papers are available in a wide range of colors and patterns; from solid colors through a crakle effect to simple or complex patterns and animal prints. Decopatch is very famous in Europe for its colourful and innovative designs and ideas to restore anything in one's house.

To achieve a high-quality Decopatch, here is a list of materials...

Decopatch paper

Display Decopatch PaperDecopatch seeks to marry the fashion flair of French textiles designs to high quality decoupage paper. Like the fashion industry, decopatch changes styles every year, encouraging creativity and new self expression.

Decopatch is a very thin paper, around 20 gsm, and is made in an exclusive factory located in Lyon, France. This paper has a UV varnish and comes with a special coating which makes it very moldable, yet very strong with vivid colors. It can be very helpful for artists, interior decorators and furniture designers in beautifying surfaces such as porcelain vases, wooden furniture, plastic fixtures and many others.

This special paper can be torn randomly without frays on the edges and can be used to create an interesting collage of patterns when applied to a surface. To use Decopatch, you have to have special Decopatch glue that will be used to melt the paper into the surface

Decopatch glue

Decopatch gluePaperpatch glossy glue-varnish works easily and in conjunction with the Decopatch range of papers. This water-based product is non toxic and odor-free. It makes the colors and pattern on the paper much brilliant, and evokes a ceramic effect.

Paperpatch varnish-glue will not alter the colors and adheres perfectly to any type of base or typical crafts materials (wood, cardboard, ceramics, wax, metal, wicker, plastic, polystyrene, fabric, glass...). It creates an invisible, water-resistant layer and is safe for children. Once dry, it makes a clear satin finish.

Aquapro sealant

Objects that are intented for decoarative use may not need sealant. However an object that is used frequently should be protected by 2 or 3 coats of sealant.
