What does 'Creature Comforts' Mean?

Getting the creature comforts you need for your home may be easier than you think. Just take a look around at everything you love and you'll find you have all the comfort you need.

You hear the term "creature comforts" everywhere in interior design, home decorating and furniture magazines, but no one ever really tells you what these creature comforts are, which ones are necessary and which ones you could actually go without. That being said, let's skip over the how-to's of creature comforts and go straight to the ways we can get the ones we need without expending exorbitant amounts of cash on the ones we don't.

So what exactly are creature comforts? Creature comforts are anything that makes your home more plush, more comfortable and more fun to be in. So skip over the chairs, the couches, the clocks and the beds. Those are all things you actually might need.

How to Achieve that Comfort in Your Decor

Think of creature comforts more as things like space heaters, throw pillows, shams, area rugs and ceiling fans. These are all things that you don't have to have but they make your home more comfortable and more aesthetically pleasing.

Space heaters and ceiling fans should be obvious creature comforts-they make your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the spring and summer. These of course supplement your already existing heating and air conditioning units and replace them on days when you don't really "need" that much heat or cool air but you do "want" a little.

Throw pillows and shams make your beds and couches look pretty and seem more comfortable than they actually may be. It's the way we make things look clean, classy and well taken care of. These items are mostly for show and don't always have a real use-very few people actually lay on their throw pillows and you always remove shams before using your bed pillows to keep the shams from becoming wrinkled or dirty.

Area rugs are an excellent source of creature comfort because they add an extra layer of plush, thick pile to the floor for your feet to rest in and so you can avoid walking on matted carpet or hard, wood floors. Rugs also help your carpets last longer and look newer longer, along with having an extreme longevity themselves. Modern area rugs are aesthetically pleasing and can become the focal point of a room or help bring all of the common elements of a room together.

Having Comfort in Your Home Makes Life a Little Worth Living

These, of course, are not the only items that qualify as creature comforts. There are literally thousands of creature comforts lying around your home. What good does it do you to have 15 blankets instead of 2? Why do you keep all of your novels you haven't read in 5 years on the bookshelf where everyone can see them? How many teddy bears do you keep around the house? Photos, DVDs, CDs, your violin, your spouse's guitar. All of these things are creature comforts that make life a little more worth living just by having them around.

Creature comforts may not be a necessity by interior decorating standards-in fact, many professionally designed homes lack the broad amount of creature comforts that most homes have-but by reality's standards, they really are needed.
