I have always been fond of fondant...I was a bakery manager and made cakes and the wedding cakes for orders and always did butter cream and whipped icing. I have always wanted to give this a try because there are some amazing ideas out there!

What do you use for the white writing on the blackboard? My sister want people to write on her birthday cake but white on black looks great.
  • Janet21 May 9, 2012 @ 1:54 pm | delete
I didn't personally make that school cake, however, it appears they used white icing of some sort to write on the blackboard. You can click the link to visit the cake decorator's flickr page and ask your quesiton there. Hope this helps!

  • ZodiacImmortal Apr 28, 2012 @ 3:43 pm | delete
I haven't made a cake with fondant but I have had one from Riviera bakery in Ardsley, NY with it on it. Its not as sweet as other frosting, but you can tell its ot regular 'icing' as when I forked in to pull off a bite, I almost pulled all of it off my slice lol

I've added this lens to my favorite lenses lens in foods

It is great to see what can be done with fondant. I saw a documentary on TV the other day showing a cake business in LA making a cake 4 feet high with dinosaurs and other pre-historic creatures. It looked so beautiful that I wouldreally feel sorry if somebody asked me to cut this cake and eat some.

I never get bored of looking at amazing cakes such as these. My craft skill for sugar art is minimal, all I have done people have been pleased with though. Shame it is so expensive to buy more than a couple of colours. Is there a special food colouring you need to use to get the strong vibrant colours?
  • Janet21 Apr 5, 2012 @ 8:40 am | delete
I feel that icing paste works better than food coloring. Two good brands are Americolor and Wilton.

Great lens and amazing cakes! For my sons last birthday I was looking for fondant as I had planned to make a Cars cake - but I gave up finding the ready-to-use and never found a recipe. Now I will give it a try with one of your recipes.
Have you a preferred brand of the ready-to-use? How do you find the ready-to-use vs homemade?
  • Janet21 Apr 1, 2012 @ 10:35 am | delete
I think they are both good. The only read-to-use fondant I have tried is Satin Ice. I thought it had a nice flavor.

  • kathysart Feb 12, 2012 @ 1:54 pm | delete
I have wanted to try this for sooo long! I am a sculptor so it makes sense that I would I guess. A really long time ago I saw this cookbook on it and thought then.. get that book! But I didn't but never forgot it. I would just like to make cakes for fun.. not like with my art where there is the pressure to sell and all that stuff. As much as I love art at times the promotion of it kills the creative energy that I work so hard to maintain. OK... maybe I will make a cute little cake to start for my husband for Valentine's Day! Yay! Angel blessed lens.

I don't know what it is about fondant that I love so much. I think maybe there is something about the texture of the fondant that came on petit fours when I was a kid. I think what people use now is a little different. It made me think about what it would be like to cover a chair in fondant! This stuff really is fun, and I am going to try a homemade one. Thanks for so many recipes! There are so many fun and creative ideas here.

For a beginner like myself, what's the secret to keeping it from tearing when you lay it / stretch it out over the cake? Thx.
  • Janet21 Oct 28, 2011 @ 12:19 pm | delete
Generally, fondant can rip if it rolled to thin or if it is not kneaded enough. Also, be sure you are not carrying the fondant too far. The best way to move your fondant is to drape it over a rolling pin as pictured on this lens. And many times it just takes practice! Good luck!
  • Liveliferead Nov 14, 2011 @ 5:21 pm | delete
If it does rip, you could dab the tear with water or place a decoration on it to hide it, obviously if the tear isn't to big! Good luck!

This is a beautiful lens. Just this morning I covered a cake board with fondant. I'll be using it this weekend for a wedding cake. The fondant covered board looks more dressy for a special occasion. Oh, here's a tip - I was using store bought fondant that was really hard, I simply but it in a bowl with a few drops of water, covered it with a plate and placed it in the mocrowave. Before I would have just tossed it out, but because it was just to cover the board, I decided to experiment. It softened up just fine and my board seems to drying well now.

Is fondant easy to ship? Is it perishable if I order it online?
  • Janet21 Sep 27, 2011 @ 9:05 pm | delete
I have ordered Satin Ice fondant online in the past with no problems. It is not perishable and lasts up to 18 months in an air tight container.

Having a small birthday dinner for my sister in a couple weeks so just maybe..... LOVE the "Funked Up" cake.

When I was in Scotland people would get engaged years before their wedding. They would then get a fruit cake and seal it with the frosting. Then they would poke holes in the bottom and ad alcohol. They would then seal it with the frosting again. They would repeat this through out time often over a year before they would have their wedding and eat the cake. Have you ever heard of this before and know what this is called?
  • Janet21 Aug 10, 2011 @ 9:54 pm | delete

  • KathyT Jun 15, 2011 @ 7:10 pm | delete
Hi Janet! This is an absolutely MARVELOUS lens on fondant! Even though I'm just getting interested in how to cake decorate myself, the whole fondant thing is fascinating to me. Would you mind very much if I linked to this lens from my new site that have going? Or - are any of these photos yours (like the one showing putting the fondant on the cake) - that I could use to illustrate a section on fondant?

You can tell me "no" if you're not comfortable with me linking to you - but this lens is so informative, and I really think it shows fondant in a VERY user-friendly light. Please feel free to check out what I've done so far - it's REALLY new - so I don't have tons of stuff on there yet - but I'm working hard at it: Learn How To Decorate A Cake - and if you think I could either link or even use one of your recipes and link it to your lens, I would be more than happy to do so. This is truly the best thing I've seen yet on it.

I can't wait to show my mother in law! Hugs, Kath :) (PS: You can message me at my profile if you don't want to comment publicly - I'm fine with that.)
  • Janet21 Jun 15, 2011 @ 8:06 pm | delete
Hi Kathy, Thanks for your compliments on my lens. I appreciate it. :) Feel free to add a link to this lens on your new site. As far as the photos go of the fondant being applied to a cake, I purchased those images myself from a stock photography site and would prefer that they were not used elsewhere. Hope you can understand. Best of luck with your new site!
  • KathyT Jun 16, 2011 @ 7:06 am | delete
I understand! I've bought a subscription in the past to clipart for some other purposes- but the photos weren't quite what I liked. If you don't mind sharing the name of the stock company you've used, I'll definitely look into that. Thank you so much for your response! :) Kath

If you put a nice thick layer of buttercream on the cake, smooth it out and then cover it with a thin layer of fondant, you can have the best of both worlds! A great looking cake that tastes delicious. :)

Tremendous! My wife PJ has been making birthday and wedding cakes for the last 30 years. She took a class at the local community college and has used her skills in making hundreds of cakes. She doesn't use your method which seems to be an easier technique than making up the shortening based icing and it wouldn't appear one would have the problems occurring with summer heat and high humidity which is disastrous to the shortening icings. Good job, how does this affect the taste?
  • Mar 25, 2009 @ 10:28 am | delete

    hello
all of the cakes looked very nice. i have tried to use fondant to cover a cake with and i found it very hard to work with. but the cake that i was trying to cover with the fondant was a roller coaster cake and it turned out ok. but, i like to make fondant roses. i think that the fondant roses are beautiful and easier to make than the buttercream roses are to make. thanks for posting all of the beautiful cake designs!
  • athomemomblog Mar 21, 2009 @ 9:18 am | delete
Great collection of fondant recipes. I live in Guatemala and it`s not possible to buy ready made, so I make my own. I did a pirate ship for my 3 year old`s birthday in December. It was fun, but not really nice, lol. In May, my other son turns 2 and he`s getting an Eve cake (from Wall-E), which I expect will turn out better.
  • From-the-Heart Mar 19, 2009 @ 3:17 pm | delete

The other day I made rolled fondant, I placed the cake once covered with buttercream in the freeze for 24 hours, the next day I applied the fondant, however the result was pretty sad, it seemed like my fondant was sweating once applied to the cake, since the cake was cold. Do you have any recommendation to avoid this from happening?
    Thanks a lot!!

Lovely lens here. I think you've covered pretty much everything fondant :) Did anyone ever see that show "Ace of Cakes" where they did princess cakes-it's just mind boggling what you can do with fondant. I will say though that I tend to prefer buttercream to fondant usually, although that Satin Ice fondant tastes good. If you're interested, check out my /www.uniquecakes4all.com">unique cakes website.
