Appliques are used to decorate clothing, book bags and tote bags, using complimentary materials. It is especially effective on childrens clothing, applying it to a plain background so the design does not get lost on a patterned fabric. If the background is not heavy enough to hold the applique without stretching, a fusible stabilizer can be applied under the base material in the area where the applique will be positioned. The applique is then hand sewn in place. A more decorative stitch, the buttonhole stitch, is sometimes used.

The Quilting Process
Although quilting is a centuries-old process of sewing warm needful items for the home, it was not until 1840 when fabric became readily available that quilting was commonly done in America. Before that, regular blankets were used for warmth.
How quilting is done -
After selecting the pattern and purchasing the fabric and the batting, the blocks are cut according to the pattern instructions. If applique is being used, it is done at this point. The blocks are then sewn together either by hand or by machine to form the top layer of the quilt. The quilt top is layered with the backing fabric with the batting in between. The quilting is done by sewing through all layers of the quilt sandwich. The excess batting is trimmed from the edges and binding is sewn to the front edges of the quilt by machine. The binding is then hand stitched to the quilt backing.
