Living Room Decorating

I was a bit nervous writing this - after all I'm no interior decorator; nor any living room decorating guru but I am so happy with my new living room - I just had to share the cool secrets to home decorating I discovered in this book.

I discovered heaps of practical ideas and real things I could do; and the No1 thing when decorating your living room is to have a vision of what you want to achieve.

Decide on the style that suits you and your family and stick with it.

No matter the size of your room you can achieve your desired look. There are heaps of simple tricks (you won't believe how simple) to decorating a small living room - easy things like colors and storage that can make your room look bigger.

Living Room Decorating Tip #1

Is your living room stuck in a monochromatic color scheme - it looks so stunning on paper but when you've lived with it for a month you are so bored with the monotony.

Candles to the rescue. Cheap and easy to implement. Try some bright colored candles or modern marbled candles in funky candle holders.

You will soon be living in a colored world again.

Living Room Decorating Tip #2

Wall Paper Borders

Wallpaper Borders - You don't have to paint or fully cover walls to add a bit more interest. Try wallpaper borders. They come in a wide variety of patterns, colors and shapes.

Living Room Decorating Tip #3

Area Rugs

Area Rugs - Even if you already have a carpeted room, you can add a brightly colored or uniquely patterned rug for a different look.

For an instant makeover area rugs are fantastic - so easy to change if you get bored. Get creative!

Living Room Decorating Tip #4

Window Valances

Window Valances - Install valances on the living room windows. A window valance is simply a small decorative curtain. It's much shorter than normal curtains. It's only function is to look pretty on a bare window, over top of existing curtains or over boring window blinds. It can bring lift to tired looking drapes and make windows look larger.

Living Room Decorating Tip #5

Get Organized

Get Organized - Keep your home organized and clutter free. This might not really sound like a decorating tip, but the more organized and uncluttered your home is, the better it will look and the more comfortable it will feel. Plus if you sell all your excess things in a garage sale or on ebay - just think of the new home décor you can buy.

Living Room Decorating Tip #6

Lighting

Lighting - Lighting can make a huge difference to your living room. Try new ceiling lighting or a new lamp or even different watt bulbs. It's amazing what a difference lighting can make in a home. Update your look with some new lighting today.

Living Room Decorating Tip #7

Color

Color - There are so many ways to add color to your home. You can do it with towels, throw pillows, table skirts, folding screens, new bed sheets, candles, picture frames and more. Just take a look around and you will find heaps of ideas to add color.

Living Room Decorating Tip #8

Walls

Walls - Often the walls are ignored so decorate them - add paintings, framed photographs, art-work, candle sconces or whatever suits your fancy. You can easily add style and elegance to a room with a few wall adornments.

Make a striking display for your living room by framing pieces of fabric. Cut the fabric all the same size and run them like a border or use different sizes and display them as a focal point. The effect is just stunning as it can be done for any room with any decor.

A different framing idea is to use all those attractive greeting cards you collect. Display the cards in various elaborate picture frames and group the frames on a wall, shelf, headboard or table together.

Living Room Decorating Tip #9

Door Handles

Door Handles - Bet you had not even given them a thought - sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference. But door handles aren't too complicated to change and come in a variety of styles and color choices. Check out your local hardware store, op shop and scrap yard for some interesting handles. Or think outside the box and make your own - I know of a shoe shop that has door handles made out of stilettos.

Living Room Decorating Tip #10

Cushions

Cushions and Slip Covers - Add cushions to your chairs and lounge. Not only will it create a new look for your chairs, but it might cover up some of those scratches that build over time. Think fun and modern - mix and match colors and use different textures.

Living Room Decorating Tip #11

Slip Covers

Slip Covers - Once you have your cushions in place it's easy to change the mood of the room by simply changing the slip covers. You can change them for Autumn; Winter; Spring; Summer; Easter; Halloween; Christmas - I'm sure you get the idea.

I deal with interior designers during most of my day and find that having things in place gives people a more relaxed and at ease feeling in their homes. That's really what the end result is, coming home to a retreat from the stresses of everyday life and having your home help them dissolve.
Thanks for the tips!

Here's a good tip for decorating your living room Since proper space planning is extremely important, drawing a scaled furniture floor plan should come before anything else. Measure every wall, length, width and height, measure space between windows, size of openings and make note of electrical outlets in the room. Then make several photocopies so that you can experiment with different furniture arrangements.
