Decorating with Mirrors: Enhancing Space, Light & Positive Energy
Ranked #13,946 in Home & Garden, #191,375 overall
Just as we are drawn to reflecting pools of water, the energy, light and spaciousness of a room is drawn to and reflected by mirrors. Use the reflective quality of mirrors to bring airiness and light into a room. Mirror placement can be manipulated to accent the beauty of furniture, paintings and sculpture, decorative accents and space itself.
If your windows open to an exceptional outdoor view or exquisite garden, bring those views inside by placing a mirror on the wall opposite of the windows. The mirror will reflect the outdoor views bringing them inside and making the landscape an integral part of the room. The mirrors will also pick up the light reflected through the windows, making the room seem larger and brighter overall.
Not only do mirrors make a space seem brighter and larger, they have emotional impact as well: A well placed mirror makes a claustrophobic space feel endless and open; they extend a space and draw in feng shui energy, or beneficial Chi. Feng shui teaches that proper placement of mirrors brings a sense of restorative calm and mirrors can shift the flow of energy in a space. For example, large rectangular mirrors placed above end tables on either side of a bed will not only frame the bed, but will lend an aura of eternity and serene contemplation to the bedroom space.
Positive energy, beauty, brightness, airiness and the illusion of space can all be enhanced by careful placement of mirrors in a room. Here are some tips on mirror placement that will make this magic work for you.

Use mirrors to 'double up' on exceptional indoor views of artwork or chandeliers, or to create an illusion of space. Accent beautiful accessories, furniture and views in your home by placing mirrors so that these items are reflected back into the room or visible from another point of view.Make a hallway or stairway appear longer by placing a mirror at the each end, or, stagger mirrors on both sides of the walls to make the space appear wider.
Try something different over a fireplace. Instead of the usual painting or framed print, hang a mirror in the space over the mantle. Not only is it unexpected, if you light candles on the mantel, the fireplace will gently reflect the romance back into the room.
Hang a large mirror high on the wall to really open up a room. A large rectangular mirror over a server in a dining room gives the illusion of a large open window adjacent to the space.
Create a gallery effect with series of smaller mirrors. Try identical mirrors arranged at exact intervals for a modern and rhythmic effect, or, choose a variety of mirrors in different shapes and sizes for a casual asymmetrical arrangement. When choosing different mirrors, unite them by frame style, color or finish for a cohesive look.
Create an unusual focal point in a bedroom by arranging a large ornate antique mirror with a arched top over a headboard. Or, instead of one large mirror, create a collage of several smaller mirrors.
Use large mirrored candle wall sconces in the dining room to reflect both candlelight and sparkle from the chandelier, adding to the sumptuous atmosphere.
Brighten up a dark corner with a mirror that reflects light from elsewhere in a room. Put mirrors on the back side of a shelf or cabinet to light up the space and reflect the contents inside.
Place mirrors between small windows to create the illusion of more window space and spacious light.
