Decorative Plastic Eggs

Decorating plastic Easter Eggs can be fun for all ages. You don't need to be an artist and you don't have to have a lot of supplies. My son and I made the ones shown on this lens five years ago. I use them for decoration in our home and they are on display year around. You just need plastic Easter eggs in any size, from the tiniest to the large ones people place in their yards at Easter. Acrylic Paint, some Permanent Markers and Clear Polyurethane or Gel Medium to seal them once you have finished your design.

You can decorate them for holidays other than Easter. They make fantastic Christmas decorations and you could even decorate some for Halloween. Paint them white and make cool ghosts or other colors and make monsters. You could even attach pipe cleaners for legs and make awesome spiders.

Assemble the needed supplies, cover your work area, put on your gloves and have fun drawing designs with permanent markers. The metallic markers will add a little glitz to your designs. Allow the drawings to dry before you seal them.

I use vases, bowls and candle holders to display mine. The candle holders that are on pedestals with 3 or 4 prongs reaching upwards look best, especially for the extra large eggs.

Metallic Colors look awesome!

A Few Egg Decorating Tips

If you are working with children on this project be sure to put down several layers on newspaper or a disposable plastic tablecloth, the permenant markers will damage your wooden tables.

Also, surgical gloves will keep you from staining your fingers, yet you can still hold the egg easily.

Place your plastic eggs on old open medicine bottles when you spray them with a sealer. Allow to dry then flip egg over and spray the bottom side. Also use a couple of light coats, don't spray heavy coats, it will run.

Other ways to Decorate Plastic Eggs

Use an extra large egg, cut an oval out of the side. Then you can paint your eggs with acrylic paints, then glue ribbons, beads and sequins on them. Make sure to glue on a hanger if you would like to use them as Christmas ornaments. As you can see in the picture, I glued a hand carved moose in this egg for a Christmas ornament and I also glued on jewels from the craft store.

And if you are real adventurous...
sand the egg(Extra-Large size), so paint will adhere better, then cut a fairly large oval opening on the side(very carefully), paint with primer inside and out, allow to dry thoroughly, then paint your egg. Next glue sequins and jewels on the outside of the egg and glue cotton and a small figurine on the inside of the egg. These large eggs make wonderful Christmas decorations.
