Vase Fillers- Tons of Types to Consider!

Use Filler Alone or to Accent the Other Vase Material

First, let's start off with vase filler ideas. Moss is a popular choice when used with plants or flowers but it also makes a great decoration when used alone. There are various colors of moss and other filler material available. So many kinds of filler can be perfect for adding items that need help to stand erect. i.e. styrofoam. Consider using any filler with one or more colors at once or evenly layer the colors. You can even just fill a few vases of different sizes and shapes with layers of filler and sporadically place them throughout a room. Besides moss, other fillers work well for solo focal art or with other items inside the vase. Contemplate materials such as:

  • Yarn

  • Marbles

  • Sea Shells

  • Feathers

  • Buttons

  • Dried Flowers

  • Dried Herbs

  • "Easter Egg" Grass

  • Plastic Ice Cubes

  • Cotton or cotton balls

  • Seeds or Dried Beans

  • Coins

  • Foil

Most craft stores sell the items you may want to decorate your vase but you may be surprised to find many, if not all the items and material already in your home!

A Fruit Filled Vase is Perfect For the Kitchen

Adding real or artificial fruit is a great way to add a burst of fresh color to a kitchen. Depending on your color scheme (if you have one,) try using matching colored fruits or different shades of the color scheme. For example, if your kitchen follows a green or yellow décor, go with springtime fruits. If you want to use fresh fruit, lemons, limes or green apples are all good choices because they don't need to be refrigerated. Layer or mix up different colored fruits and place them in a wide-mouthed vase. You can also use one fruit type for a more simple, modern look.

Celebrate the Seasons

Change the Vase to Match the Season!

Alter your décor in an instant by filling a vase with symbols of the season. Pine cones or colored leaves work great for the fall. Evergreen sprigs look lovely in a clear vase and you can even paint a few of the pine cone edges white to rejoice the winter months. Try using varied colors of plastic eggs for spring and seashells with sand or palm leaves for a summer décor.

Add Scent to Your Creations, Too!

Feathers Can Accent Many Types of Room Decor

Tall peacock or ostrich feathers placed in a cylinder shaped vase can be used to for several types of decor. Whatever your style, you have the option of choosing bright colored or neutral feathers. Balance is key. Use feathers of varying widths and heights to create the look of a floral arrangement.

Decorate with Seashore Inspiration

Create an island or seaside design. You can make a compilation vase by filling a tall vase with shells and/or coral of all shapes and sizes. Arrange them at attention-grabbing angles. Put it on display during summer months or in an already beach or ocean theme-based room. Bathrooms are great spaces for such themes. Adding small starfish inside the vase or variously sized starfish to the surrounding walls makes a great accent, too.

Decorating the Outside of the Vase

If you feel your vase is lacking oomph or pizzazz, add some flair to the outside of the vase. Just don't over do it if you want the inside to be the focal point of the piece. Consider a light frost glaze (inside or out) or even hot glue small trinkets upon the glass. You can also use glass paint and let your imagination go!

Adding Color Can Transform a Whole Room!

Using Flowers or Float a Flower with a Candle

Transform From Classic to Brilliant

W hen using flowers, trim the blooms from fresh, dried or artificial flowers and layer them inside a vase. Often times, the more colorful and dramatic the blossoms the better. However, if the room is already set with enough color, a classic white arrangement works well. You can also float a single bloom (Plastic or real) at the top of a small, water-filled glass vase. Add a few drops of bleach to help preserve it and change the water often.
A nother idea to spruce up the piece is to add some clear marbles to the bottom of the vase. They will catch and reflect the lighting from the room and an even more astonishing effect.
Add a candle to the top for a more dramatic effect. This makes a great centerpiece.
It can look something like this:

Using Metal, Gold or Silver

Shiny Stuff!

Metal and other shiny objects will make your vase art project sparkle and reflect light. Add coin collections, antique keys, mismatched silverware and/or costume jewels can all make an elegant impression in your space. An arrangement of shiny objects using a short slender vase with a wide mouth is perfect for this look. Fan out silverware around the mouth and add other pieces to the center. Place on a hutch in the dining room or use it as a centerpiece for a table.
Another great idea is to use unused nuts and bolts, coin collections or trinkets such as costume jewelry!
Use all gold or silver objects.

Create Art and Storage at the Same Time!

Hobby Inspired Displays

A two for one! If you love to sew or often use yarn for your hobby, turn a used vase into an art and storage creation. Yarn and thread come in all sorts of beautiful colors and soft textures and filling a vase with these items is a great way to show off your hobby and store your material, too. It often comes rolled in interesting formations or balls, so you can layer your yarn in its unused form or create and arrangement with your remaining loose scraps.

A dd silver knitting needles or craft scissors and display them at the top. Use caution if you have young ones around, though. Display it on a high shelf or mantel so it is out of their reach. This type of creation also makes a great gift for any crafty friend or relative! It's fun to make, personalized and very thoughtful! Think of how much Grandma would LOVE a gift like this!

Lovely lens and has inspired some ideas. You could also use jam jars - a line of jars the same size part-filled with different coloured glass nuggets or beads or even pebbles and shells would make a nice decoration. Rated and also voted for you on Lensroll.
