Decorating with Slipcovers

Ranked #49,915 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #998,508 overall

Slipcovers are a ready answer for anyone who wants to give their tired chairs a quick make-over. This is not to say you can't use slipovers on new sofas. If you want to have a different look and feel around the house, it's time you looked at slipcovers as a cheap yet elegant decoration. Of course they come in handy for very practical reasons such as covering up a stain that won't go away no matter hard you clean it up or a tear that cannot be repaired. You can use slipcovers on various pieces of furniture. If you have traditionally considered using them for your sofas and loveseats while leaving the ottoman, recliners and the dining chairs, you need to reconsider your stand! These too look lovely when draped in beautifully colored slipcovers.

Versatility of slipovers makes them easy to work with, as you can choose the perfectly tailored ones that fit right over the chair, or you can opt for loose ones that give a more relaxed look. Tailored slipovers are tidy and customized to look like upholstery. They are an exact fit and give the chair a neat and elegant look. Loose slipcovers on the other hand can have buttons or ties to hold them in place and give a casual, comfortable look to a room. You can accessorize a plain slipcover with fringe, cording, ribbons or buttons here and there to vary the texture and get a glamorous look.
To get you started, let the color-scheme around the room be the deciding factor for the color you want your slipcovers to have. The color on your walls, curtains, carpet, rugs, should help you choose a color for your slipcovers. If your room is already decorated with orange colored rugs then you can co-ordinate and go for warm and rich hues such as reds and orange or contrast with cooler ones such as grey and subdued blue.

Earth-tones too look great in any room, you know, all the different variations of green - moss, sage and olive look particularly colorful. The gold, and caramel palette is another earth-tone that has great aesthetic appeal and which gives a coordinated look whether yours is a Contemporary, Traditional, Shabby Chic or Country style.
Instead of settling for just one color, consider using a combination of contrasting colors for more effect. Let your imagination run wild and you will have excellent mix and match pieces. You can also mix plain and floral. For example, if you choose a red and white floral pattern for the slipcovers on your sofas, you can have the cushion slipcovers in plain red. But just to mention, if you already have too much color around the room, it's safe to go for a plain color or else the look will turn messy!

When choosing the material, consider how often you use the chair. If it is exposed to constant wear and tear, go for a hard-wearing material such as twill or cotton. For a dainty look, silk and velvet are perfect. Use leather slipcovers for a chic, elegant look. Perhaps the most exciting thing about decorating with slipcovers is the flexibility to change the look with the seasons. Over spring, you can express your bubbly feeling with bright, floral slipcovers; express the easy mood over summer with light fabrics and colors - lots of whites and linens; go for natural colors over autumn - chocolate brown, burnt orange or crimson red, to reflect nature; and warm, cozy colors and fabrics for winter - corduroy and velvets in red or green are excellent.
