Dressing Up Your Walls To Set The Tone Of Your Home Décor

Sometimes its hard to know where to begin when it comes to home décor. Should you decide on furniture from a particular era and then plan around the furniture or should you start with choosing the color and type of floor covering and work your way up? If you are unsure of where to begin, the walls of the room make a good starting point. You can achieve any look you are striving for by using your walls as a blank canvas.

Dressing Your Walls with Wallpaper

Wallpaper comes in a wide assortment of colors, patterns and textures and is the most versatile covering for your walls. You can cover the entire wall with the chosen wallpaper or cover only the top or bottom half with wallpaper and use paint on the other half. Another option is to use a trim to cover the seam or paint your wall and use a border of wallpaper at the top.

If you choose patterned wallpaper, you will need to keep the rest of your décor more modest as it is hard to match up patterns and even if you do find the same pattern in fabrics for your furniture, there really can be too much of a good thing.

Dressing Your Walls with Paint

With all the great ways there are to paint your walls, you can get as simple or as fancy as you like. You can choose between matte, glossy and semi-gloss paint when it comes to dressing your walls with paint. Matte paint is better at hiding imperfections, but glossy paints reflect more light. Be careful when you choose your color because a color on a sample at the store can look much different on your walls. Take a few paint chips home with you so you can get a better feel for how the colors will look on your walls. Think about the trim around the bottom and top of your walls, too. You might want to choose another color to enhance your wall paint.

Once you have a basic color, you can then decide whether you want to go with the general painting of your walls or get more creative with your paint. Texturizing requires that you use two or more colors of paint, so make sure the ones you choose complement each other.

Coordinating the Wall Dressing and the Floor Coverings

No matter what color or pattern or medium you choose to dress your walls in, the best way to bring out the best in your walls is with a nifty use of area rugs. If you have a monotone wall, choose one large or a couple of smaller multi-hued area rugs that contain at least a few flecks of color that match your wall. However, if your wall is dressed in a patterned wallpaper, you may want to choose an area rug in solid color; one that complements your wallpaper. For example, a green area rug will bring out the green patterns on your walls.

Coordinating the dressing on the walls and the floor coverings allows for a look of pleasant continuity as the eyes move from floor to ceiling in a fluid glance unbroken by any disharmony in color or design.
