Decoration Day AKA Memorial Day

The last Monday in May is celebrated as Memorial Day and is dedicated to our fallen troops and those who have fought and died in wars to preserve our freedoms. Even if you don't agree with the war, support our troops. These brave men and women put their lives on the line so we can live and enjoy all our freedoms. Many communities have Memorial Day celebrations that include parades, fireworks, picnics, and memorial services at military cemeteries. The first Decoration Days were established to honor fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. Many of the Southern states did not celebrate the holiday because of continued feelings of hostility toward the North and there weren't many Union soldiers buried in the South. The holiday was called Decoration Day until 1967, when a federal law changed the name to Memorial Day.
