Appreciating and Selecting Abstract Art for Your Home

Many people view abstract decorative fine art paintings and cannot make head or tail of the intended message that the painter intended to convey. The difficulty with abstract art (as the word "abstract" in the name suggests) that it does not convey information to the observer in the same way as a regular painting whose subject is usually obvious. Many people do not have time to study the numerous "schools" (loosely translated as "styles") and ascertain the artist's style and type of composition. Unless an immediately obvious image or idea comes to mind when viewing abstract paintings most people either move on, or make up their own view of what a particular work of art is all about.

History has a wealth of examples of paintings, many still on public display, whose notion is still a mystery. However these paintings are revered not just by art critics but also by the millions of gallery visitors who may or may not know what exactly they are looking at. It isn't really important whether the artist's vision is translated through to the average viewer, what is important is that visual references in abstract paintings and other works of decorative fine art, create imaginative thoughts and images in the minds of those viewing.

Modern abstract art

In more modern times, abstract artists have broadened their horizons and some have pushed the boundaries beyond general acceptance, some using bodily fluids and animal parts to make up what appears to be a grotesque representation of some concept that the rest of us just shake our heads at. These are in the minority however and have unfortunately besmirched the notion of abstract art as an acceptable form of decoration.

The latest artists that keep to regular materials and techniques produce some wildly imaginative works which can "jump clean off the wall" figuratively speaking and fire some neurons that have never been exercised before in the brains of the viewer. The reason is that regular art has a subject that can easily be deciphered in general, at worst an expressionist painting will offer some abstract detail, but overall, as in the average Turner composition, the viewer can distinguish events that the artist is painting.

Pluralism

Pluralism is common in abstract modern decorative fine art style. Artists are now internationally known and the different schools and styles taught to new artists will include those from all cultures of the world. This has led to a wide diversity in the world of abstract art and galleries now have issues with how to display the huge variety of art now available from all corners of the globe. For the discerning buyer, especially where a design implementation for a home, workspace or public place might involve multiple works, it is worthwhile making the time to get around and visit some online galleries so that when choosing works, a mutual theme can make a collection into a complementary art display instead of a collection of mismatched works.
