This collection of decorative pillow patterns includes both simple designs you can make in just an hour and some more complex patterns that take some experience but they're all pretty, fun, and generate great ideas for even more ways you can use pillows to decorate your home. I've built this list over the past couple of years and will add more as I find them.
Make Your Own Modern Throw Pillows
Easy patterns and your own fabric choices
Want unique modern throw pillows that are all your own? If you're even the slightest bit crafty - or might be but haven't tried - these books provide clear and easy directions for making your own modern throw pillows. You can even shop for great fabric online!
Note: When making your own modern throw pillows, any fabric is suitable but some are more easy to work with than others. For simplicity, a washable fabric will be easier to take care of although more delicate fabrics can be dry-cleaned. If your fabric is too thin, be prepared to add a lining fabric to the back of your modern pillow fabric. Not only will this help define any print on your pillow fabric, but it will add to the strength and longevity of your pillow.
All fabrics used in pillow projects should be washed beforehand to ensure a proper fit of the fabric to the form rather than having your pillow covers shrink after the first wash.

Just found this great instructional video on YouTube for a great petal pillow. Large petals make this a unique, modern design. While the video moves quickly through the instructions, they're fairly clear and you can, of course, pause as needed or go back and rewind if you think you missed her directions. Use your imagination on this one in terms of size of the petals and the coordinating fabric colors.

Amy Butler Snow Mum Pillow Pattern
Just to forewarn you, this link will bring up a PDF file which takes a minute to load but it's well worth it - and absolutely safe. Amy Butler is a very popular and modern fabric designer and offers some free project patterns on her website. This particular project is drop-dead incredible. Shown in all white with white fabric fashioned into flower petals in the center, it's quite eye-catching. Imagine it in black with white petals or white with patterned petals. It could easily be the centerpiece against a couple of solid colored, square pillows. The directions are print-friendly and very clearly outlined.

Placemat Pillow Project
What a cute idea! Make a modern throw pillow out of a two-sided, cloth placemat! This looks pretty easy and she used a very neat $5 placemat from Pier 1.

While the example picture shows this pillow in an animal print, it would look beautiful in any print. Corded trim and envelope tassel make this one a stand-out pillow.

It's finally Spring! The weather here is beautiful and there's a gentle breeze rolling through nearly every day. It brings with it the scent of fresh cut grass and blossoming flowers.
Now's a great time to take on a few new pillow projects. They're one of the easiest things to make if you're a DIY'er. Modern pillow fabrics are available online or at your local craft store.

Simple Throw Pillow Makeover
Make a new modern throw pillow out of an old one
Hey, that's a pillowcase! I thought we were talking about modern throw pillows? Read on...
This is a great tip for updating modern throw pillows you already have or for making new modern throw pillows on the cheap. All you need is a pair of great standard size pillowcases. If you already have a couple of throw pillows but don't like the style any more, tuck them into pillowcases and fold the pillow case ends in around the pillow like you would fold a sandwich bag. Pillowcases are generally 21" wide. If this is too wide for your pillows, buy pillow inserts online that are 18" or 20" squares.
This tip also works for temporary changes to your look for either a change in seasons or for special holidays. It's much easier to store some extra pillowcases than it is to store a bunch of extra throw pillows!
