Decoupage Pencil Holder

A Decoupage Craft For Kids Using Mod Podge

Are you looking for some easy craft ideas and activities for preschoolers and kids and somewhere to put all those pens and pencils? Or maybe you would like to help your child create a unique gift for someone special? A decoupage pencil holder is a fun and practical paper craft idea and chances are, you have all the supplies needed to make this pencil holder at home in your craft room.

This tissue paper craft is an easy craft project for kids and would be best suited for children that are 4 years old or older because the instructions below call for a glass jar (although a can or plastic can be substituted), the use of scissors, and it does take some time and patience. Adult supervision is also encouraged.

Tissue Paper For Decoupage Crafts

I love this tissue paper. It definitely has many more uses than wrapping gifts. Its wonderful for lots of different types of paper crafts and perfect for decoupage.

Mod Podge~The Best Decoupage Glue Around

Cover your work space with news paper.

Rip or cut tissue paper into pieces. I prefer to rip the tissue paper as I like the "uncut" look the paper has. The size of the peices also does not matter but I usually try to keep the size to around a half of an inch.

Turn glass jar upside down so that the mouth of the jar is on the newspaper.

Open your Mod Podge, glue glaze, or decoupage glue, and using your paint brush, brush a thin layer of glaze on the bottom of the jar.

Place one piece of tissue paper on the glue, then "paint" over it with glaze.

Repeat this process until the jar is fully decoupaged.

Leave for about 10 minutes or until glaze is dry.

Bottoms Up

When the Mod Podge has dried, cover bottom of jar with glaze, remove adhesive protector from felt piece, and place it firmly on bottom of jar. I used pinking shears to give the edge of the felt a ziz zag pattern.

Leave for 10 minutes or until dry.

This would be a great time to get the embellishments ready for decorating your paper craft project. You can leave the jar the way it is and give it an extra coat or two of Mod Podge but I think it looks better when its dressed up a little.

Decorating Your Craft Project

Take your brush and spread Mod Podge on the jar (in roughly the size of your picture cut outs).

Place picture or pictures on the Mod Podge. Then paint over the picture.

If you are using beads, you can place them anywhere you want. Just make sure you use enough Mod Podge to hold them in place but not enough that it runs.

When everything is in place, set your decoupage pencil holder aside until it is dry.

When dry, coat the entire jar (and embellishments) with modge podge again.

When dry, coat with Mod Podge one more time.

When dry, fill with pens, pencils, or wrap it up and give as a gift.

I haven't done decoupage on glass, but this looks like a good project. Need to think about what I'd like to do. The flowers would be so nice.

Decoupage is such a fun craft, and there is very little that cannot be made to look better with the addition of decoupage.
