Working Duck Decoys, Decorative Decoys, and Waterfowl Art

This page is about decoys of all types including working decoys, decorative decoys, carvings and other waterfowl art. Browse sections for information related to duck decoys, goose decoys or other hunting decoys.

Hand carved working decoys are still used to attract ducks in many parts of the country. In places like Chincoteague Island Virginia, guides are selective about equipment and often maintain a variety of hand carved decoys patterned to mimic the species of waterfowl.

Popular hand carved working duck decoy patterns include mallards, black ducks, pintails, teal, bluebills, goldeneyes, buffleheads, canvasbacks, redheads, scaup, mergansers, and others.

The Art of Wildfowl Carving

From working decoys evolved the traditional art of wildfowl carving. Modern carvers create artwork so lifelike, that one has to look closely to make sure the items are not live birds.

In contrast to working decoy carvers who limited their craft to ducks, geese and similar fowl, artistic carvers create designs representing all types of waterfowl, shorebirds, songbirds, upland game and other bird, fish and animal life.

I have two old working decoys. I have tried unsuccessfully to find out more about them but the only books I find are on hand carved wood decoys.
One is a JC Higgins decoy. I believe this was from Sears & Roebuck. It appears to be some sort of foam over wire.

The other one is a collapsible decoy. It has a rounded wood base and a painted decoy top made of canvas or some other heavy material. There is a metal lever on the right side of the decoy that when rotated activates a spring system inside the fabric. This causes the decoy to expand for use. I've attached a picture below. This is one I would like to know more about. When and where it was made, approximate value, etc. I've tried antique shops, hunt clubs, hunting magazines,Cabelas, Bass Pro, Ducks Unlimited, and as I've said dozens of books. I can't even find anyone who has seen one of these before.

Can you be of any help or point me in the right direction?

    Thanks,

    Roger Altena
