Shane Reid
This is my tribute to a man who has dedication, determination and courage.
This is the story of... Shane Reid or "Pagan " to his friends.
In 1991 Shane was left partially disabled after having a motorbike accident, which left him with a fractured left femur and another break just below the knee.
He also received compound fractures to the left tibia, left tibial ankle with forefoot fractures as well.
Shane lost his big toe, second toe and half the third toe as well as having an equinus ankle.
He ended up with a 3cm shortening of the leg. Rodding of the femure and external fixators on his lower leg for 12 mounths.
After 14 years of suffering discomfort and agony, Medical Staff finally decided that the best option for Shane was amputation of the leg just below the knee. This was carried out in the year 2005.
Shane decided that he needed something more in his life rather than sitting home all day like many others would otherwise do in his condition and decided to do something about it.
Shane Reid is one of my students currently learning Martial Arts.
He was learning various styles including Jing-Wu
Wing Chung, Wing Tsuen as well as Jeet Kune-Do.
Shane decided that he wanted to learn other styles and was encouraged by myself to venture forward with his goal.
So off he went to learn another style.
Shane is now currently practicing Zen Do Kai Martial Arts
with the Raiders Family in New Plymouth, New Zealand under
Renshi Bill Ollington and Sensei Craig Campbell-Smart.
Shane started as a White Belt and progressed throught the arts.
Shane received honours from his club by being awarded with the following:
1st Place Kata Competition Senior Division.
2nd Place Sparring Competition Senior Division.
Senior of the Year Zen Do Kai New Plymouth 2006
for Dedication, Strength and Character.
Shane also received two trophys:
Senior Kata Division.
Senior of the Year.
Updated NEWS: Sat 11th Agust, 2007.
Shane's Latest belt was at the 2007 Senjo at New Zealand Police Training Academy in Wellington, New Zealand.
Shane Reid currently holds the rank of Brown Belt, and is now training towards his Black Belt.
Shane was awarded a Gold Medal, by 7th Dan Kyoshi Steve Nedelkos for being the best within his grade as well as the nation.
All of this was done within a time frame of 18 months.
What makes Shane an inspiration to me?
Well all this was done with one leg and a prosthetic leg.
What makes Shane outstanding?
His trophy for Senior of the Year
was last awarded way back in the year 2000
What makes this special for Shane is the fact that his
Sensei Craig Campbell-Smart was also on the Trophy.
